Bad players

Every hand is a gamble. Some take a bigger gamble than others…if it pays off great for them…doesn’t mean they are good or bad…just that their gamble paid off.

The goal of the game is to have your gamble pay off more and pay off bigger than every other gamble.

Players that that bad mouth other players probably bad mouth people in general. I tend not to listen to those people no matter were I am.

I believe that I am a sufficiently skilled player. My results are pretty good. My monthly profit is $ 120-150. At the same time, I never criticize other players because I don't see the point in such criticism. If my opponent makes mistakes then that's fine, all I have to do is use those mistakes to my advantage. :)

Well the examples given in these threads lead me to the conclusion that a lot of the players that talk smack at the poker table - tilt about "bad plays" from other players fell into the "Dunning-Kruger-Effect" trap.
The Dunning-Kruger-effect describes the correlation between knowledge and self-consciousness. At the beginning everyone starts at 0 knowledge and 0 self-consciousness. But as soon as you start getting the first knowledge and start to understand a little bit the self-consciousness rises to extreme heights because you think you know everything and don't have enough knowledge at that moment to realize how much of the topic you are still missing.
The more knowledge you gain though the faster you realize how big the topic is - the more knowledge you have - the more you know what you don't know. So whilst gaining knowledge a lot of players then start to loose a lot of self-consciousness. This effect can be titled "con man syndrome" because the person in that state thinks that his work is way worse then it seems to the outside.
Only later when you start nearly conquering the whole topic players in poker start getting the self-consciousness back to a point where it matches their knowledge.
But in poker the meta-game always changes - the knowledge from 10 years ago wouldn't be worth a lot today - and there you can see players from 10 years ago falling into the trap of the dunning-kruger-effect as well, even though at one point they were up there.

Hope you guys found that interesting and if you like to find out more about the dunning-kruger-effect just google it - really helps you understanding where you stand with your skills.

How often do you see players talking smack on the tables about how bad other players play? I been playing non stop the past year and i found out some funny things. Players who put down other players play i find make the same mistakes and more. Players that say they are good but never win are my favorite ones and the topic. If you think you are a good poker player but you lose all the time, Then most likely your are not a good poker player. Are you that player or do you know that no matter how good you are there is always a way to lose. It took me a long while to learn not to tell ppl that im a good player cause why would you. Bad beats shouldnt hurt you if you got a Bankroll and a good head on ya.

eagleaces, hello. You wrote that for a long time you weaned yourself from the habit of calling yourself a good player. I think it's not worth dividing the players into good and bad at all. This is primarily a game. The rules are well known, and I doubt you have any unique knowledge about the rules of the game itself. Of great importance are the skills that you acquire with experience. I think your skills are on top. Players who scold the game of others at the table just seem more impulsive, and this is probably their mistake: they get too carried away with judging others and make a lot more mistakes because of this, so they often lose to more experienced and focused players, regardless of the style of play. Very often it is behavior, temperament and poor discipline that are the main reason for losing. I see a huge plus in online poker, because there is no pressure from such players. Chat can be disabled or ignored, and actions recently added to Pokerstars, for example, in my opinion, are not strong irritants. I think that everyone who plays poker is at about the same level: the strongest player can also fly out. And that doesn't make him any worse than the others. Sometimes it can be a matter of chance. Do not pay attention to the players you wrote about, and play for fun, because their main enemy is themselves. Good luck to you at the tables and less aggressive opponents.:icon_sant

I think we must have education and respect regardless of how good or bad the opponent is. This is basic, those who do not respect and have no civility should not participate in any type of interaction with other people.

Thinking that you are a good player is easier than knowing what mistakes you have and how to fix them.

I feel like the only times I see trash talking in the chat is at very low stakes games, which makes sense because why would you anger a player that you are winning money from.

Either way, the amount of times I've seen it is very low. I'm sure I could have missed it in the chat from time to time, but it just doesn't seem like a thing to me.

I've noticed a few times online now, people that will smack talk other players. I've taken to blocking peoples chat (even if the talk isn't aimed at me).

The funniest one I did see however was one person (Player A) who started berating another (Player B) as he was the only person who called Player A on the flop but ended up losing out with AA on the river by a straight.

Player A started calling him a crap player (albeit in more colourful language) because he apparently shouldn't have called in the first place, and that he could clean Player B out easily.

Next hand, ends up being Player A vs Player B again, Player A goes all in on the turn, Player B calls (B had a slightly bigger stack), Player A had a flush, B had KKK. River comes out and B won with a full house, kings full of aces.

Player A then continued to call B a "crap player" before he left the table... To which Player B's response was "well, I'm the one thats left at the table"

I must admit, I was laughing quite a bit lol

I prefer to inform everyone that I am a weak player. I try to show it by my actions at the table. Oddly enough, this is my strategy. However, I really am still learning to play poker. Happy New Year!

I have nothing against well-intentioned advice, but of course it shouldn't be at the table. I don't like people who put other people down at the table all the time and try to make them insecure. If it happens to me then I don't care, they should talk as they want. But I see how some people feel addressed by them and then sometimes it comes over me and I react to it. But mostly I keep my chat closed. What I noticed, however, is that these people try to make the other people at the table bad, mostly fly out of the tournament very quickly. That is also a reason why I do not find it necessary to react to it, I just wait until the annoyance flies and then calmness returns at the table

I definitely got it in my head that I don't need to be the best poker player. I just need to take better actions than my opponents in that session. This has already taken a lot of weight off me.

Perfect, I strongly agree with you, I just would dare to add, that I need to be, at least break even, once to me poker is a hobby.

I think this is the worst setting for the human psyche. I would rephrase this setting. If you think that everything is bad with you, then it is not so.
