Soft playing is cheating (though it can be difficult to prove), but I'm not sure I see the connection between soft playing and check raising - surely check raising would be the opposite of soft playing?

I think everything important on the topic has already been said in this post . . . this all just reminded me why I haven't been able to talk myself into going to a home game in a long time. If I'm gonna drive somewhere to play it might as well be the casino, and otherwise I can find a good game online whenever I feel like it, so what's the point of slow, weird, badly run, etc. home games?

I took flack for this in a 'friendly' game once as well. My argument was simple; "You sat down with $$ the same as I did, mine is here for your taking... don't think I'm not coming for yours". - probably not verbatim but close. People that feel because we're friends I shouldn't take it so serious shouldn't be sitting at a poker table... PERIOD!

In my experience? Beer and laughs. And also pies. Pies are important.

But I agree, they're almost never the proper venue for winning loads of money.

If we're playing for money, I'm going all out. If you don't want your money gone, play just for fun (which I do with my family sometimes). You could be my best friend away from the poker table, but poker is a game with a simple goal, n a tourney survive the longest, and a cash game win the most money. I'm going to do whatever it takes to win, and everyone else I play with knows that. Sure we're all friends, but we're here to win. Any other way just wouldn't be fun.

Doyle Brunson mentions it in his book "According to Doyle" that sandbagging or check raising was, those many years ago, frowned apon.

But the cut throat nature of the beast has evolved the game to where guerilla tactics are needed to maintain an edge in holdem.

I've been check raised many times before and have check raised as many players when I have had the stone cold nuts.

There's nothing like flopping a full house showing a flush draw and youre in early position.

sounds typical of some home games. Some host got out played a few times, stomped their feet and said...new rule, NO MORE CHECK RAISING !!

Another new rule, no more playing home games at THAT host's house!

I do play in home games on a regular basis. Because many of us have played together so long, we have become friends - but there is NOTHING friendly about our games. I love them all, but when we're playing, I want to hurt them all and send them home with empty wallets.
