Just because your favorite sports team has a team prayer, doesn't mean their win is a gift from God. It means their natural talent + practice and a better strategy/play = victory. And just because BINGO is played in a church on Wednesday night doesn't mean God wants you to play BINGO and/or gamble.

You can't rely on religion to win at poker any more than you can rely on Altoids to win at poker(but you'll probably make a lot more friends with your powerfully minty breath! especially if you share). I have a lucky feather. It's my good luck charm. Lots of times I win with my lucky feather sitting atop my monitor. Am I relying on the feather for victory? Is the feather God? Of course it isn't.

I'm reminded of Dumbo though, and I think I'll see about everything when I see an elephant fly(someone's gonna insert a Raymer joke, I can feel it).

Ask the feather if its god, it could be? You never know.

kinda ignorant imo

He was just so far behind in so many hands. For the most part he was making moves that should have cost him his tourney life. He risked more than half his stack with 4's when he really didn't need to and he had so many questionable plays. Just my thought on the matter but I felt like other guys played much more consistent tournaments than Yang last year.

One could argue that he was playing to win, aka getting as many chips as possible for the final table to secure a solid top position.

Of course thats msot likely not true, but replace him with phil ivey, what would you say?

A lot from column A and a little from column B, I suspect.

For poker players to get TV time (after the news cycle of their win has expired, at least), they need to make final tables. At the very least, they need to actually play in some events.

According to his Hendon Mob profile, he'd never entered an event for more than $1K before the Main Event, he'd never won a tournament, and he's only cashed in one tournament since.

If he's not playing in anything, then there's no opportunity to give him coverage. In this year's WSOP he played a couple of the opening events and was out within a couple of hours.

The Main Event is, as far as I know, about the only televised tournament where they actually start coverage from day 1. Most tournamnents only show the final table and even those that do show back footage (Aussie Millions, EPT) don't start filming until at least day 2.

I suppose there are freebies like Poker After Dark or the Heads Up Championship where you don't need to play well to get on TV, you just need to accept the invite. As someone mentioned above, he accepted the Heads Up invite, he just didn't do anything exciting.

Long story short? Tournament poker players need to keep doing noteworthy things to get on TV. At the very least they need to actually turn up once in a while.

Whatever ANY of you think of him, he has 2 things we all lack; one of those way kewl bracelets, and about $8 mil.

FWIW, IMO the final table at last year's ME was a donkfest, period. The Russian dude was the most skillful player at the table,IMO. Tuan Lam played the smartest game of the bunch, and folded his way to 4.8 mil, and a Team Pokerstars deal. Yang won, of course he was lucky. Nobody wins an event like that without luck, and lots of it. The fact that he didn't spend the last year touting himself is purely his decision. He can afford to kick back if he chooses.

There's another possibility. Maybe he knows how lucky he was. Maybe he just doesn't wanna push his luck.

Now if you'll excuse me I'm going to go and play for pennies. That's how far my level of expertise has brought me :p. Playing for pennies.

I agree 100% I actually ordered and watched the whole final table hand for hand. The Russian Kravchenko was solid, but he just didn't get the cards when he needed them. Tuan Lam played the best out of anyone at the final table. He realized exactly what was going on and folded like he was getting paid to do it. What I found funny was the fact when Lam would come of out of his shell with a raise a lot of the players wouldn't respect it. It just showed they really weren't paying attention to what was going on.

Table full of donks

He is getting a show. He is getting a segment on the 700 club. And he is going to teach us all how you can win 8 million by gabbling with Jesus in your corner. See just like Football, whoever prays the hardest will win. Jamie Gold Won in 2006 because he is Jewish, and that was the closest God would get. Paul Wasika believe it or not is Hindu. So next time you got AK vs. AA just get on your knees and ask Jesus for the QJT.

I think several factors contribute to Yang's lack of exposure.

Primarily, UIGEA has hit the poker world pretty hard, putting a big slump to the poker boom. poker sites are afraid of the U.S. market and have cut back their advertising.
Without the advertising, people are less excited about poker and fewer people are playing the Main Event.

Couple this slump and diminished advertising with the fact that a lot of poker players don't think that Yang played very well, and you have a *substantially* smaller market for his endorsement.

Also, Poker sites and the poker community have worked hard to emphasize that poker is a game of skill and determination. Then Yang comes along and prays for divine intervention to get cards. That sort of flies conflicts with their message.

My 2 cents:

1.I highly doubt God helped Yang win the ME. He denounces gambling in the Bible several times!!!
2. TV poker shows are for entertainment. A player has to have personality ex.Hellmuth,Madisow,Laak.
3. He,like Gold, probably chose not to be in the spotlight!

Now if I would have won the ME I would milk it like a dairy cow!I'd be on every tv program I could get myself onto!!!!!:)

No, no I am pretty sure it was God. You see I asked him myself, I said "Oh Lord, What happened at the 2007 Main Event? Every time Jerry needed a card, he would simply ask you, remind you that your kingdom is forever, as if you have some sort of Alzheimer's, and his miracle card came on the river." And the lord said unto me, (that's how you quote God, you use "say unto me) and the Lord Said unto me, "Well he prays like that for everything, he doesn't really get the concept of prayer, and he will pray like that for what he wants for breakfast, how a dental x-ray will come out, and for a new episode of the Office, I really don't have a say in any of that, but I can control what cards come out. So I figured, put the guy on a roll and he will maybe, just maybe shut the **** up with this thow kingdom bullshit" and I said, "wait, is this just George Carlin ****ing with me. The lord said nothing unto me, and quickly hung up.

Jerry Yang sits at 26,600 chips at the completion of Day 1. The chip leader has 146,000.

His stack has been going up and down. Look for a bustout shortly after his Day 2 begins.

Wasn't that more for gambling in the temple?

Anyway, poker isn't gambling. It's a strategic money management game of skill and luck. Just like the stock market, minus the companies and shady filthy rich CEOs (unless they are sitting next to you at the table). :D
