Poker is a game of luck even if some people say otherwise.

Luck is huge, without it no amount of skill will get you far, IMO :)

Luck plays a significant role in poker, especially in the short term. Even the best players can lose with strong hands due to unlucky cards on the board, and weaker players can win big pots simply by catching the right cards at the right time. However, over the long run, skill consistently outweighs luck. Good players use strategy, psychology, math, and discipline to minimize the impact of bad luck and maximize their edge. So while luck determines individual hands or sessions, skill determines long-term success.

Luck is definitely part of poker, but it's far from the whole story. Skilled players consistently make better decisions, which minimizes the impact of bad luck over time. The key is focusing on what you can control—position, ranges, odds—rather than blaming variance. Many players get stuck thinking it's all about luck, and that mindset holds them back from improving.

poker is profitable despite short term bad luck if you are skilled enough for the same reason why normal gambling is a losing game despite how lucky one can get short term, it is all about EV and math that just adds up over the time

Luck in online poker is one aspect of the game that can influence short-term results. Because you play so many hands in a digital environment, the variability of the hands you are dealt and the situations you face can sometimes mean that a bad hand will beat a strong hand by chance. However, it is important to remember that over time, skill and strategy are what truly determine success in poker. Luck may help you in one hand or another, but those who play consistently and make good decisions tend to have better results in the long run.

Luck is just a short term point in poker not in long term

If you practice and study you are going to be better, but indeed luck is a big part of the game.

Luck certainly plays a big role in poker, especially against unfamiliar opponents. If you know how your opponent plays, you can beat him with skill.

It's true, luck is integral to the game of poker, but I find myself luckier when I apply and respect poker strategies, skills, and bankroll rules.
I don't rely on luck, because it won't always be on my side. Instead, I believe mastering skills and strategies is far more important for achieving a good result.
Good luck.

Look, I believe you have to have a bit of luck, but you also have to do your part by opening several screens to increase your chances of playing, learning the right way to play, etc.

Yeah, they blame luck like it’s their toxic ex — always the reason things go wrong. Sure, luck’s part of the game, but study, discipline, and good decisions tilt the odds. Some folks just don’t wanna hear it — easier to blame the river than their own play!

If you rely solely on luck, you won't achieve success (especially in the long term). It's essential to develop strategic thinking and other skills—luck is just one of the elements among them. Yes, it’s pleasant, but without knowledge, it means nothing.

The answer is simple:
“Professional players”. That's the argument they can't use. Professional roulette and slot players (games where only luck matters) don't exist.
Although it's totally disappointing to see how luck constantly wears you out, I'm aware that it doesn't depend on that alone. I write this because I'm tired of the variance and after losing all the preflop from 28bb to 35o.
Despite that, I'm aware that luck doesn't play a big role in poker.

I consider myself a very lucky woman playing poker. But, in a way, it's essential. If you are very unlucky, you will never win anything.

I feel that generally you need some lucky moments to go far in tournaments. At some point you will very likely get it in bad and then need to get some fortunate turnouts.

That's how long I've been playing, I've become more and more convinced that there is one key hand in the tournament, and if you're lucky in it, you play and go to the final table (and maybe win the tournament), but if you lose... well, I get it, either you lose a significant part of the stack, which in the future will most likely lead to a crash, or you fly out right away...

A little of this, a little of that, but I guess in the end, skill wins out.

You do need the run, no question in MTTs. However you need skill in not beating yourself. Patience is also key.
