In the long run, skill; in the short run, luck!

In the short term, luck rules, so even a weaker player can win some sessions. But in the long run, skill always prevails. It usually takes tens of thousands of hands for skill to overcome luck

By definition the "good" player should win over the longer term.

You can, obviously, never win a poker hand in your entire life, even if you are the best poker player in world, as luck has it's hole and may destroy your game easily.

But this is statistically almost impossible to happen...

In long run you will have the tendency to always be in advantage and, consequently, win by your positive EV.

It depends, but this is a great question!

I remember when I once heard from a poker pro saying something very interesting to think about; it was something like: "The 'long term' is not something to care about, because it will never arrive", since the "long term" is just a theorical concept to complement the tendency to win that I told above.
You’re right , luck can ruin any single hand or even a whole session. But poker is all about the long run If you consistently make +EV decisions, variance evens out and skill takes over

I don't dedicate my life to poker or even play every day. I want luck. Let the pros keep the skill

Many players say poker is a game of skill, but in short sessions, luck can play a significant role.
Do you think a truly good player always wins in the long run?
How many hands do you think it takes for skill to overcome luck?
Poker is definitely skill in the long run… the problem is the “long run” sometimes feels longer than my bankroll 😄

I think it's not about the number of hands played, but about the number of tournaments. A highly skilled player will eventually win tournaments and make profits. Even if you have a bad tournament, regardless of the number of hands played, you can recover in the next one. You know that when variance is on your side, you'll make the most of it. Meanwhile, an average player may even lose when the variance favors him.
