The math in poker is not that complicated. Anyone can do it if they know the formulas. I don't think being a mathematician would really give someone that much of an advantage. Here are common poker math problems:

expected value Calculation (W = Won, L = Lose)
EV = (%W * $W) - (%L * $L)

Pot odds are simply ratios and percentages:
1/2 = 50%
1/3 = 33.3%
1/4 = 25%

Rule of 4 and 2:
Odds of making your hand on the flop--outs x4. Odds on the turn: outs x2.

A mathematician who studies the mathematics of poker hands will obviously be a long-term winner. They know when to holdem and when to foldem.

A good mathematician will have an advantage due to well-developed logical thinking. However, player luck is also a very important factor.
