The 3-7 straight beats the A-5 straight because it has a higher top card.
  • A-5 Straight: A-2-3-4-5 (5-high)
  • 3-7 Straight: 3-4-5-6-7 (7-high)
In poker, an Ace acts as the number 1 to form the lowest possible straight (A-2-3-4-5), as there is no actual 1 card in a standard deck.

The ladder, A2345, is the lowest, from there it continues 23456, and so on until 9-10-J-Q-K, the A, has two functions, number 1, or 14, depending on your hand.
