Most annoying spelling mistake.

OK I know this is a poker forum and not a discussion of the English language but I just wanted to point out one thing. And even if one person out there learns from this then this thread would have served its purpose:

When you pluralise words ending in "y" please could you make sure that you get rid of the "y" and add "-ies" to the end?

EG

lady becomes ladies
lorry becomes lorries
fly becomes flies

I may be up my own fat arse here and you can call me a pedantic arsewipe if you wish but I just want to do my small bit in trying to halt the abuse of the English Language that occasionally occurs on these forums.

I later plan to do a thread on the constant abuse and misuse of the apostrophe.

OK, call me what you will.

"Lorry" is a British term for heavy and medium types of, what you would call, "trucks".

Hi all,
You should have mentioned your from england as americans now think your an ass because you spelt it arse.
I'd like to know what the singular version of sheep is please, or is it the same and why? eg:
There are many sheep in that field.
There is only one sheep in that field. (is this correct and if so why does everything else have a plural?)

The worse spelling mistake is done on purpose during an online poker game...Phuck!

Right, and if one is shy, it would be sheepish, but it the whole flock is shy, they would be sheepishies...or is it sheepiesish? This language thing is confusies (multiple confusions).

Just me again, in america they refer to lorries as either "trucks" or "semi" (not going into the plural of semi) In england referring to a semi would probably be associated with houses eg: semi-detached
I learnt a lot very quickly when first moving to america especially with cuss/swear words, the first time I used the term ****** was very wierd as everyone just looked at me like a was crazy, later my wife asked what it was. Americans do not use the term bollocks either, strange really as they seem very advanced in the art of cussing/swearing.
I can cuss/swear pretty good at times but I still can't manage to string a whole sentence together the way the americans do, great people.

Few other terms of difference:

Pants in england are underwear in america
Pants in america are trousers in england
Fag in england is cigarette
Fag in america is gay
Tramp in england is hobo in america
Tramp in america is a hooker (no not football, prostitute)
Biscuit in england is cookie in america
Biscuit in america is bread in england (or similar)

You simply change i to y and add es. semyes. Or maybe going backwards you change the i to y and subtract es, therefore the plural of "semi" is "my".

Oh yes, I forgot to mention. The rule only applies if there is a consonant before the "y".

Otherwise you just add an "s".

This is not directed toward anyone so don't take this personally...but this thread reminded me of an old joke...about the Texan who goes to Oxford. He's wandering around one day (lost) and approaches a professorial looking guy. He says, "Excuse me sir, but could you tell me where the library's at?" The professor says, "First of all, young man, we here at OXFORD, do not end our sentences in a preposition!" Without missing a beat, the Texan replies, "Pardon me. I don't know about you guys and "ladys" but when I just typed in ladies wrong back there either my browser automatically underlined it in red, aka "spell check" or it was cardchat doing it. Either way. I haven't the slightest idea why people are spelling things wrong all the time when there is spell check built in. Maybe its just Mozilla? Who knows. Give it a try.
