Online vs. Live Poker

so guys i want to know in your opinions the diference wen u play online or u play live poker just opinions :listen:

Live poker is played with real cards and chips. You have to look at your cards and remember them, they aren't constantly displayed in front of you on a screen. Might seem trivial, until you see a flop come with two spades at a table filled with new live players, and everybody immediately checks their cards to see if they have spades, after which some have looks of disappointment and some are betting with a new gleem in their eyes. This ain't gonna happen online.
You always have the whole betting with chips thing. Online, you type a number or slide a bar, click, and you just bet $10.75. Live you have string bets, single chip rule, misstacking chips, fake pumps, etc. Online you also have numbers all over the place. Each player's balance is displayed neatly in front of them, while live everybody has random stacks of chips (and you will have to notice that guy has two black chips sitting on top of that stack of red). The bets are displayed as little number, not a string of chips spewed across the table that you have to count, and the total in the pot is another neat little number, not a massive scattered pile of chips that you should have paid attention to how much had been bet previously. Nobody is going to tell you how much is in the pot in a live game.

Other things that happen in live games that are impossible online -- players act or try to act out of turn, cards inadvertently get exposed, people fold out of turn, the turn card gets dealt prematurely. Never gonna happen online.:dontknow:

live poker is much more interesting than online poker

Playing online would be much more relaxed.You can also play more than one table.

I suppose the obvious main difference is being able to read the faces of your opponents. For me I prefer live because I don't have to worry about any technical problems which could interrupt the flow of the game. I tend to prefer cash games and I do like the low stakes offered in the online rooms, but I'm also comfortable with the 1/2 at the local casino. The only other factor is that I like the feel of the chips, you just don't get that from online poker, you know what I mean. As far as Donks, they're everywhere, they just tend to be a bit more scattered in the live poker, at least that's the way I feel.

You can really see the differences of the two by playing long enough to live and online.

Each has its own advantages and disadvantages.

I prefer live the environment is different you can meet some great people and I love playing with my chips

also less distractions no tv/fridge for me

I feel compelled to go to the bathroom on tournament breaks because I wouldn't want to miss a hand

I play live with a buy in of 100 dol and more online to 5.50 at 4-8 tables

live is way easier, 2 5 live plays like 2cent 5 cent online lol not even kidding

It takes longer live to get a feel for the tables and people.

Funny thing to me is how live then begins to become 'just like online, only with live faces as avatars'. I find myself seeing this player as 'so and so' and that player as a different 'so and so'.

There are lots of guys who can decipher tells just by body language and that is the biggest edge you can have as a live player.

Online, you never know whom you're playing against.
For all you know it could be the best adapting algorithm you might be up against.

Live game also has a factor where by the tone of your voice when you say 'raise' pros can ballpark your hand range and with what you're calling post-flop of course.

I've read that players can tell how strong your raise is by looking at the way you drop the chips on the betting ring.

Live games evolve at a different pace as compared to online.

Pot odds are never displayed and you gotta eyeball.

Understanding of Socioeconomics becomes more prominent in live games.
Things like what to expect when you're up against the chip leader etc..

If the live Regs were really any good they wouldn't be sat in a casino 1 tabling 50NL and 100NL night after night.
or even worse losing almost every night in live MTT's
Most of them will tell you online poker is rigged,

the thought of how bad these players (who think they are good) actually are makes me shudder and feel crawly inside

Online poker you'll see a lot of tough regs doing it as a job not just a hobby, and so they will take it much more seriously and will make lots of adjustments like basing lots of decisions on mathematics.
Live poker at a local casino you'll see players base their decision on things like their honest feel and reads, and so if your a math player you'll have an edge on them more often than not.
However the amount of hands played is SO much more online than live, and so you'll have to play long hours to get close to playing the amount of hands you do online.

You actually bring up a very good point about possibly facing an algorithm. If that is the case, then we as humans can expect to lose. Even with extreme discipline, we can never truly beat the algorithm in the long run, we're left with guessing, unless we adapt as well as it does. good post.

Online poker is much more convenient since you can play it from the comfort of your home!! But live poker is better as you can see and analyse your opponents better. Personally I prefer online poker.

I like this quote, mostly because it's true. Although when you think about it, poker is about using your assets to get the advantage. In particular with live poker you can use your profile and tendencies to work in your favor, or you can use reverse psychology to goad another player to chase you. With online poker, your left with pot equity and bet size to do the talking for you. Whichever choice you make, as long as you protect yourself when you don't have it, and maximize return when you do, you'll do very well at the real or virtual table.

the two alternative forms of gambling have their good points and not so much .. I prefer online. and you can play multiple tournaments at once and have more chance to win or lose .. lol. Live is good but for the fact that they speak with players and also to learn to read the gestures of opposites .. among other things ..

Being card dead for 8 hours is no fun, at least with online you never have to experience that trauma. Your lucky to get 30ish hands a hour on a live table to, so if your at a quiet non action table, it can be pretty boring. They both have their positives, but I think online is vastly superior

Reading some of these posts the running theme is online players feel live players are complete dolts. For the most part this is correct, but this is due to people being in a comfort zone, it doesn't necessarily make live regs bad.

Most of them if given the opportunity to learn how to use a HUD, play optimum online strategy, and become a rakeback pro, would take it but end up playing live anyway. This won't be cause online poker is "rigged", it'll be cause some people simply prefer the live aspect of the game

I started online and ended up a live player because although I enjoyed the bevy of bonuses and easy money you get from online poker, it never matched the sheer thrill of playing live. Does that make me a bad player? not necessarily, it just means I'm an extrovert and live poker stood out to me more.

Live poker is heavily regulated if it's played in a casino, while online poker isn't.
When anything is unregulated or deregulated a crisis usually follows. When the banks were allowed to lend any amount of money without reserves to back up those loans, there was a banking crisis. These loans were used to buy property the proprietor couldn't afford. This led to a housing crisis.
Online poker is convenient and everyone plays it so why shouldn't you? You shouldn't question whether one of the players at the table is an AI or super user.
Or whether those unusual, though frequent bad beats aren't normal.
If you do happen to hint at something untoward, you'll be labelled a donk and conspiracy nut.
I prefer the security of a regulated poker table. At least when I lose I know it was to a better player or lady luck.

I experienced it and I was dead after 7 hours and 42 minutes of play and I surrendered - pushed all in with nothing and was happy that I can take a break and was satisfied with 3rd place in that 1,10 MTT

Live poker is more serious and seems players has more hability.

I never played poker in a live... and to be honest, I don't know how I will get it, and in online poker play only a bit more than a year
