Sometimes the best move in poker is simply folding and waiting for a better opportunity. Many players lose chips because they force action every hand. Staying patient and disciplined is often the key to long-term success.
What’s the longest time you stayed card dead in a tournament?

About 2 hours, Mistery Bounty tournaments are a great patience test, but it paid off. Nevertheless, I don't think patiently waiting is the answer to all, but most of the times it pays.

and that AA may be the end of your tournament, or you may get no action at all from it and wonder why you were waiting for so long

I agree with what you said. To answer your question , I have stayed card dead all the way to blinding out in many tournaments. I heard a well known teaching pro say that in 60 % of his tournaments he gets no traction and blinds out. That is the nature of the game, The thing you DO NOT do is start playing stupidly. I have done well in many tournaments after being card dead and losing 2/3 my starting stack but then getting some good cards, sometimes things turn around. Never go on tilt and play stupidly, because if you do you will not be around when the cards change.

Unfortunately, very often you wait, you wait, but you don't wait for good cards, well, the game doesn't work and that's it. And sometimes you don't have to wait, every card is good.

Patience is one of the hardest skills to master in tournament poker because folding for long stretches feels like you’re falling behind. I’ve had sessions where I was card dead for over an hour and a half, basically just preserving stack and looking for spots to steal blinds when the table dynamics allowed it. The biggest mistake is getting bored and convincing yourself that a weak hand is suddenly playable.

I once went nearly 2 full levels without a playable hand in an MTT 😅

Just folding hand after hand while blinds kept increasing was really frustrating.
But staying disciplined is important — forcing action while card dead usually makes things worse.

During those stretches, I focus more on table dynamics, stack sizes, and good steal spots.

I agree, but the super turbo turner has to be more aggressive at the start.

Patience for me is more information to use when I get in to a hand and a better hand to enter the hand with.

Well, sometimes you have to play aggressively or passively depending on the situation; it depends on your playing style. Personally, I like to play according to my game strategy. If I lose or get eliminated, I'm at peace because I applied my strategy

These last two days, I've had to be patient with bad beats, and both, curiously, involved a 7 on the turn that screwed me over. For example, I had AJ and my opponent had A7, and that damn 7 hit him on the turn. Well, knowing that on average, this will only happen in two out of ten hands, I can move on.

Hello, I actually see it as a balance between being patient and being aggressive. It's not easy, but playing time and playing experience will make you learn.

Yes, I completely agree with the author of this thread! Of course, a lot depends on the playing styles of your opponents at the table, but overall, a more tight game will bring you more prize money. But that doesn’t mean you’re limited to a tight style for the entire tournament. ;)

I think patience works best while you still have playable cards.
Because when your chips get too short, there comes a point where you're practically forced to take more risks and look for all-in situations.

The longest time I've ever gone without good cards in a tournament was the entire tournament. Nothing good came my way until I was swallowed up by the blinds. It was traumatic and terrifying. I couldn't connect on anything in over 40 hands, considering the times I entered the pot and the times I folded pre-flop.

Now, to be perfectly honest and you get aces- it doesn't mean you will win the hand. I saw a video of Doug Polk from the Main Event- he had pocket aces, was all in pre flop against pocket kings. And there was a king on the flop. So yes, being patient is good, but it doesn't mean you fill win the hand. Or that you will be financially profitable. Come to think of it, it all depends hoe lucky you are in your flip situations. Sooner or later you will have AK versus JJ or be in a similar situation.
