I feel fields were much softer back then, so he was able to stand out more.

Nowadays, NLHE players are so much better that he kind of gets lost in the crowd in my opinion.

Anyone agree?

What's your stance?

I personally think that Phil Ivey is one or perhaps the best poker player there is, but I agree with you today things have changed, this has to do with the explosion that poker had especially NLH for the transmissions of the tv of the big tournaments, there are millions in the world that are dedicated to this, especially in online rooms and it has become more complicated for the old professionals to win tournaments

For me, any player that took serious money from playing poker is a great one. That is the final goal of the game.

Phil

I would say he is overrated but like in any sport or game new blood always is entering the field and once upon time "superstars" become past history.

I believe no one could say he wasn't a prime time player in his day. Just look at his winnings and stats. The game of poker has grown so much over the years I totally understand how staying on top is a challenge for any of the professional players.

To me was and still is a legend in the poker world

If you're talking about the main event in the wsop, then yes he hasn't performed as well as he should. You have to realize though, there are so many more games/tournaments/tables that are played that he is a part of. In those games, he usually performs pretty well.

In his prime, I do not think Phil Ivey was overrated at all. However, at this point I do not subscribe to the idea of any 'greatest player of all time' (with perhaps one exception, Stu Ungar).

Poker has always evolved but that evolution has accelerated at a phenomenal rate in the last decade or so. Few if any players who peaked twenty years ago remain consistently competitive against the current younger wizards.

So, from one viewpoint I would not presently place the likes of Ivey (or Negreanu etc.) even close to top fifty in the world. However, that does not mean they could not compete, place of even win in a highly ranked tournament. They have a fundamental skill set after years of countless hands against top flite opposition coupled with a very high level intuitive game.

Further, I believe if the likes of Ivey (or Negreanu etc.) were so inclined to study in the manner younger players now do, conducting endless sessions with solver outcomes, they could climb back to high level consistency. But, it is fairly obvious after years of playing and many millions won, they do not feel so inclined.

Fair enough. I presume Ivey is intelligent enough to be satisfied with being unquestionably the worlds best for an extended period even if that period is slowly retreating in the rear window.

Ivey played several events at this years WSOP, placed highly in one event but had the funds confiscated due to his ongoing legal problems following the edge sorting scandal.

He has also competed is several of the Triton series as they are outside of US jurisdiction.

People forget his online NLHE results are horrendous post-Black Friday. He has lost millions with Polarizing in Full Tilt and RaiseOnce on Pokerstars.

Those results make me question his abilities

Perhaps you are right
But all I saw on Social media was that he was at top and the best
This was some years back when I just started playing poker
I did not really follow him to find out if he is actually really good

This guy is an absolute legend. I think he should be paid the money he won illegally since they only exploited a mistake by the casino. And in the end the casino is responsible for the cards.

Hi, Phil Ivey is not overrated in No Limit Holdem at all.Although,he is not playing as many tournaments as in his prime,he is still one of the best poker players in the world..Nowadays,thanks to poker online ,there are many talented playes who make him difficult to win tournaments as usual..I really look up to him anyway.

I enjoyed watching him on TV. Since I haven't watched for a whole, I'm not sure who is best.

Phil Ivey is definitely not on his A game anymore. I don't think he was overrated but I do think that because of the troubles that he has been having as of late he not where he needs to be mentally for the game.

I agree, the casino did it to themselves.

The 10 wins at the WSOP speak for themselves, it puts him in legendary company....makes him a legend too.
Phil Hellmuth, Doyle Brunson, Johnny Chan, Phil Ivey, no one else is close. Eric Seidel with 8 ,he's a poker legend too.

And Ivey might have a main event but Moneymaker sucked out on him when it was getting close.

As a poker player, don't think overrated is synonymous with Phil. Never would put him in that category.

There is some low poker activity in the last year or maybe i didnt saw him in the main event so often but what i wanted to say is that Phil had skills and for sure he still have it! But there is no better way to know it untill you you are heads up with him on the other side of the teable :)) good luck to all

Think it has to do with a lot of the new generation poker players playing straight GTO so it's much more difficult for highly tricky players like Phil Ivey to play back against them.
