I don't think they have any resemblance, because poker is a game of luck.

I think so. strategy is important in poker, just like in chess. There are a lot of good poker players out there who have had good results in poker.

Maybe a chess background helps to not get bored when you are card dead for hours. Also if we are talking for heads up I guess it helps too.

I think that chess and poker are 2 different games, just like there are others, in any game you have to have certain skills... if you are good at chess, that doesn't mean you have to be good at poker too, each game has its own job

It's not just being a good chess player that will make someone successful in poker. What happens is that whoever plays chess needs strategic intelligence and sharp logic and this is one of the necessary qualities for poker. So, good chess players already start in poker with the logic and strategy part already refined. However, playing poker requires emotional control and a bit of luck too.

I think those who play chess do have a good base to play poker, because both have to use extrategy and a lot of concentration,
Any sport, including chess, improves concentration, patience, and discipline. Any sport that a person used to regularly practice is a good basis for everything, including poker.

In truth, I always make a joke about it.
In chess, if you have to play a final instance against Magnus Carlsen, the only luck you can have is that an hour before he has a fever of 40° or a stomach ache that could be due to surgery. He gives up, you win hahahaha
The only luck factor that could be discussed in chess is that you are lucky that the opponent makes a very bad move, that there will be endless possibilities for you. But in reality this is not luck, but a bad move by your opponent that favored you.

There is luck in chess. Round about 1975 I was playing an Australian international in a lightning tournament at Ilford. I can't remember his name but i think this was the one where I was joint first (with a young bloke named Parsons) in the major Tournament. I lost my queen for only two pieces, which is not a good trade, but suddenly I had the Horwitz bishops, my knight was entrenched on a strong square, and his queen was helpless. I won the game.
Many a player has won the exchange and lost the game. There are countless variations on that. And that is before we discuss opening traps.

Yes, for sure, you gain both physical and mental patience, and that's very important in poker.

Playing chess can help you a lot in poker. They are very similar games since both have strategies that you can use at the tables.

It helps a lot to think before making a decision, many times in poker we act without thinking and in chess we have to analyze and think.
It's a great idea to play chess to get better at poker.
