aces is definitely played differently in certain positions on the table, or if the player has been running good or bad, or if the player wants to trap another into betting for him/her, nice to have - hard to play - doesnt always win that's for sure - bet carefully

I usually try to be agressive with it because you can easily lose with pocket aces, especially if there are 6 other people in the pot... if i raise 3 times the big blind, there will be about 2 or 3 people in the pot... allowing me to have better odds and not letting certain people get lucky. But you also have to mix it up and slow play it sometimes because then you become too predictable.

The worst thing you could do is go up against someone else who has pocket aces, especially when he has the ace of hearts and the board goes hrt-hrt-hrt, spd, hrt. Talk about wanting to fling a computer. But what else can you do in that situation? We were down to 100 out of 4000 in a bodog $500 freeroll, and jockeying for a pad to get into the money. Still hurts though.

ACES

omg..there is a MILLION different ways to play aces..ok maybe I havn't got a million ways but there are just too many ways and in different situations...cash game,tournament,sundaymillion,10 cent sng,bubbleposition,1st hand, chips counts, hand possiton, against who and how much you can win..with many many more..My advice to any new player,,play aces very aggresive...raise 1/2 of whatever you got then right before the dealer lays the flop....SMOKE IT....or just go all in PREflop...."again" there are many many ways to play aces. the one that most popular with beginners should just be ALL IN.

Since I am a beginner as said above I go all in - If someone calls you have best chance and that is what this game is about!

And being a beginner, you are losing alot of value by pushing all-in with AA, not only that, but if you push AA early in a tourney and get called by a player who wants to see a flop with his A4 suited and flops a str8.
Then you'll probably come back here to complain about how some donkey knocked you out by calling you AA allin with garbage.
I don't care if it is AA, it's not worth it to play them too aggressively unless under certain circumstances.

I'm Amused

Shine says:

so what you saying is you would have raised 2.5 to 3 times the BB you'd fold your AA with a 235 rainbow flop?

i have slow played them a lot of late, and gotten burned.
i think the lesson i learned, is that, while i might not need to raise all in, or half my money, i should raise 3-4 times big blind. yes, i might not get called, but if raising 1-2 times, or just calling, its too hard to get value after the flop, and if you do get called with large post flop raise, you might have gotten burned by lower person catching cards....which is always a risk, especially since that always has to happen to lose with your AA, so u remember it more often.

I find pocket aces are a punishment for me if I go all-in preflop. So, I usually wait to see the flop before committing all my chips. It also depends how deep I am in the tourney. If most donkeys are gone i'll go all in preflop.

i tend to play them different in different positions on the table. if im in a blind and its been raised when it gets to me it depends on how many called raise or how many still to act after me if say the cut off raised after 3 limpers. if that was the case i'd pop it up. if im utg i sometimes like to limp hoping that someone late will raise and i can re raise or flat call if it would be heads up. id say its not wise to limp with em unless ur very early to act and want to disguise your hand.

I busted with pocket aces the other day in the following way. I was on the button and there were 4-5 limpers. I raised some 6 bb. Big blind calls. Flop comes J 5 2 rainbow. BB puts in a pot sized bet, I raise all in and bb calls with J 5. So this is one way to play them.

Make sure you raise enough with them. Higher limit games you're raise is going to earn more respect so J5 or A4 would not call. I got busted by 36o in a $3 mtt. All you can do is raise enough and hope to see a reraise. But other than that just pay attention to the flop and be aware of the possibilities out there. And I would say never try to slow play them.

OP, for someone at your experience level, you can use a fairly straightforward system for playing Aces.

Preflop: Open the pot in any position for 4-5x the Big Blind. If re-raised, shove all-in. If someone opens in front of you, raise him about 4x his raise. Try to go all-in preflop if you think you will be called! You want to get all your chips in the middle right away, because you DO have the best hand in the world right now.

If, for example, you opened for 4x the BB, and were called by, for example, one person, you now have to do some flop-play. This goes far beyond just your aces! Look around the golden archives and in good poker books for advice on reading the "texture" of the flop. With AA, your hand will likely NOT improve on the flop, but you probably DO have the best hand. In almost all cases you should bet right out, hoping someone with Top Pair Top Kicker calls you.

There's no shame in taking a small pot with pocket Aces. It is often said that with AA/KK, you will probably either loose a huge pot, or win a small one. So be careful when you have AA and someone is looking to play a huge pot (unless you hit Trips or something).

I love limping with aces in early position if there are a lot of loose aggressive players behind me. Even a small 1 bb raise will have them raise/steal from late position. If you get the re-raise you want, don't mess around - re-raise a lot, typically all in.

The limp is not to be tried if you don't have those kinda players on the table. If you do, and get 6 other limpers to the flop, you may easily get outdrawn.

I saw Phil Ivey on Poker After Dark try this move twice over a few couple of hands recently. Nobody took the bate though. Tough crowd.

Yes limping with aces is a pretty dangerous play. But if you are UTG or UTG+1 and have seen a raise by very aggressive players nearly every hand then limping in is probably a good play as long as you get the desired raise then reraise alot or all-in.

I only limp at pretty aggressive tables, and then rereaise, 3-4 times depending on how many callers are in the hand at that present time, but if it's just me and the blinds, then limp away I say, limp away

^^^^^ this is true

I lol at people just saying go all in, like way to not get anything with your aces. If you do, you got lucky.

If you raise x3 the bb with 89s, 910s, QJs, KQs, KJs,1010,99,AK, and KK, and AA then you have the most profitable way to make money, as your hand will be disguised.

i lose with pocket AA 85% of the time

I wouldn't say 85% for me, but I will say the more I play the more I see that pocket A's are nice, but will be beaten regularly.

It's one of the things I have been teaching myself ....... no matter what two cards are in front of you, don't let it cloud your judgment.

Don't get me wrong, I'll take 'em. Just don't figure you're "bullet proof". (get it? I think I made a poker funny).
