Poker a game of chance? Making consistent money?

I was wondering are there people who are making consistent money playing online poker? Because i feel the chance and random negative variance can make it very frustrating at times. Bad beats and random bad luck can put your bankroll on a bad run, is it worth all the grinding?

If you actually know what you are doing then yes. it is worth it.

On you will know if it is worth all the grinding to you?

because if you make the right decisions and the
right plays through both bad and good runs
you will make money in the end

I am a grinder and I dont look at my results as a
session thing, or a day or week thing, I look at how
I do yearly, and in 5 years of keeping accurate
records of my results I have never had a losing
year, I dont make a fortune but I dont lose and I
am by now means a very good player but I am
decent and half the battle is finding the game
you make the most money in and stick to it

You will always get varience but over a long
period of time a good player will always win
over a bad player, it just takes time

maybe you guys are right, but i was just feeling bad about the periods when we go through negative variance, and i dont want to go through that cycle of ups and downs for a few dollars when other areas of life can pay more money with a little effort.

There's a saying that poker's a hard way to make an easy living...

I would suggest reading Dusty's "Treat your poker like a business". The best thing I've done for my game so far to keep things like variance and tilt in perspective...

It's about a mindset and an attitude.

Just remember not to confuse variance with bad decisions.

hey man, that looks like a poem

Even though a game of chance if you make less mistakes than your opponents over many hands you WILL make money. Easier said than done though.

So the key is to be playing better than most of your opponents most of the time. As you go up in stakes skill goes up to. So unless you are a very good player you won't make a living(although any kind of extra $ is good ). You can still bring in decent money by multi-tabling while improving to move up in stakes.

All this, proper bankroll management, and high volume does make it worth it to some. You must be willing to work on your game constantly and keep up with the latest trends or you will be grinding in the micros forever. So when starting out if $ per hour are more important than learning then unless you are having fun it ain't worth it.

Maybe its just that Its morning and I'm a bit hungover but this thread irritates the blazes out of me. You've been a member for a little while now. You've made 42 posts. I'm going to assume that you might have taken the time to actually read some of the threads.

Yet in this thread you ask a question that has already been asked and answered at least a hundred times in the last few months alone. Can you make serious money at online poker? Answer: YES.

Do you think the pros on Full Tilt and Pokerstars are playing for matchsticks? There is a thread on this forum where poopypoker is keeping us abreast of his attempt at a volume of play record at pokerstars. Newsflash, he didn't take a leave of absence from Mcdonalds to give this poker thing a try. He's a pro. All of the DTB coaches who are members here are pros.

The second part of your post is basically a whine about variance. For the love of God, YES bad beats suck we all know this! Either quit whining about it or at least post about it in BBV.

Please just read some of the information out there.

I think that is always the struggle. Knowing you are a good player but taking that to an online game can be different and difficult. I don't think the outcome is made up already as the last post suggests. I just think you have to play premium hands and play your cards right when you have the nuts to capitalize!

Hehehehehe well thanks for all your responses, if it pays back a reasonable amount after all the variance and bad beats its alright, but i was wondering what if it doesnt pay back, im a pure limit poker player and my stakes are 10 cent/20 cent, and a couple of times i was down $10 on those stakes and it sucked, at other times i made $10. I was just having doubts whether this actually does pay back, but some of you say that it does, so its cool.

YES, It is worth it in the end.
I was askiing the same ???, to myself midway through last year, but, after deciding to keep at it, things have started to change.

I had to change a lot of things, the main one was tighten up my hand range, I found that it has also made me play a lot tighter in my own game at the same time.

The next step was putting both those things into, the power of position.

Since then, I have quadripled my bankroll, and gathered a heap of point through challenges, not to mention the rackback.
