Many, if not most, poker players see what they want to see and not what is (just look at the "rigged" thread.) This is not just in poker, but that is another topic. Poker has two main elements. Skill and luck. The skill is your job. The luck is random. This means you can do everything 100% correctly and still lose a lot of money. You can also do everything wrong and win. Then there are factors - for winning players - like rake and so on, but that is a level that needs to be addressed when you become a BE or slightly winning player. Poker as an income is very hard work. Like a construction job. Or a coding career. Or being a professional musician. A construction worker who likes physical work and is strong enough to do it relatively easily will find the job satisfying and perhaps fun. Someone who likes making code become things you see on a screen will find looking at a page with 25,000 characters interesting. Someone who enjoys learning an instrument can sit for hours a day and learn the nuances of music and how to recreate this on their instrument will end the day with a smile. Can all of you in this thread say that all of these are things (I could list many more) you can master and make money at? I have worked as a professional musician for 40 years. I am very good at what I do. I worked HARD to be as good as I am. I have had a successful career. I am in the top 97% of earnings as a musician worldwide. The top 97%!!! I won't go into details about my career, but I have had a life of ups and downs, and I have toured, been on television literally hundreds of times, recorded on scores of albums, songs, advertisements, film music tracks and so on, taught privately and at schools and so on. Top 97% and I struggle at times. I am not even near wealthy. I still struggle to make ends meet. Think about this.!!! I not only played my instrument, but I had to master dealing with the father-in-law at a wedding. Or dealing with a drunk producer on the round table discussion when I am offering my final mix for a pilot TV show. Or having a bass player with a substance abuse problem, but the curtains are going up in 5 minutes and there is an important person who can help us land that tour, and he came TODAY to hear the band. This is another way of saying, it's not just being able to play AA or chase a draw. You need to not only know the starting hand chart or the odds and out, or reading an obvious player, you have to deal with the nuances that change every hand. Facit: Most people will NOT make it in poker, just like most won't make it in music or programming. Now, you can perhaps make a supplementary income with poker, but the fact is, very few who start, make it. Having said that, if you are honest about your skill and ability, if you are willing to play when you DONT feel like it (and play good), if you do the work on and off the tables that a successful player does, you do have a chance. In my humble opinion, the best tool to make it in poker is self-honesty. And the ability to say (in time) "I am not good enough yet" or "I am ready to start my path to 100 NL" (or w/e) and then take the consequences of that statement. I saw a lot of comments here that remind me of some of my former students saying stuff like "I know I will write that song that will make me millions, so I don't need to worry about my math test" or "I know I will be discovered" and so on. This is so wrong on so many levels. Still, good luck. But watching Kung Foo Panda does NOT make you a fighter....... EDIT: On the topic of musicians and earning, 95% of professionals (! not as a hobby) need a second job to pay bills monthly. 0.5% of professionals make real good money. Around 5% live from it, like a teacher, a recording engineer and so on without any other job. Many last a few years and do ok but then it dries up and they need another career. [/QUOTE]
