Is Poker a Good Way to Make Money?

Hi,is poker a good way to make money in online turnaments or is it better live.

poker is hard. Most will lose money over the long haul, and a few will win. Very few poker players make a consistent livable income from poker without having other sources of income.

Most players win not make money but lose. Its takes alot of study to become a winning player. Play the game for the enjoyment of it and if you make money that's even better.

I like live cash for steady winning. But if you win a big tournament it can be a big payday.

If you don't have money or have a small amount of money to start, online games are better because there are a lot of options for those type of players, which we usually don't find it in live games.

Yes you can make money, but don't forget you need a lot of experience and skill and of course you need luck, and the most important thing is to study poker and a good bankroll management

I find it difficult to win consistently at cash games. Also high rake at low stakes adversely affects the win rate.

Best thing one can do to help win rate is play against recreational players.

Which is more profitable depends on a few things including your skillset.

For example, if a strength of yours is live reads, then live poker may be more profitable than online poker where you can't see your opponents. Both live and online offer their pros and cons.

I will note though, online has much more variance than live poker for the simple (yet important) fact that more hands can be played in the same amount of time (not as much waiting for hands to be dealt, cards shuffled, chips bet etc. since online is usually automatic or one or two clicks at most versus physically doing the actions). Due to this, the "identical" stakes online are much more competitive in ability. For example, the skill level of a $1/$2 game online would generally be tougher players than a $1/$2 game in-person.

Online poker having more variance means that one can potentially make more money in the same amount of time, but naturally could also lose more money in the same amount of time. This is somewhat offset by the earlier mentioned fact that online competition tends to be tougher at "identical" stakes though.

Conversely, live poker may have a better chance for recreational players to want to "gamble" and the mere presence of more "fish" might make live games softer and that might translate into being more profitable...

I suppose it would just take a little experimenting to see which is most profitable for you. Another consideration is that online may be more for the math-oriented since HUDs are allowed on most sites, whereas live poker may be more for the psychology-oriented since everyone can physically see their competition.

You have to be very lucky to make money in poker.

It can develop that way, Lot of work ahead before that happens. Spending time away from the table is important but many side step that. Going over hands, missed value and smaller aspects can be missed to where profit is minimal.

I find it easier to win live than online, live you can study your opponents' play and online it depends more on luck.

Hi there. it depends on what you want to win. if you can win without being a pro. but you can also lose a lot. I'm not a pro but playing poker I buy some things that I like with the winnings. since the dollar is very expensive

It is easy to be seduced by the glamour and fame of winning a big event, a few millions and recognition of your skills by the entire world... But the harsh reality is that of only a very very small percentage of players are considered successful, and even a slimmer percentage of these players are the ones that make the big bucks, the ones everyone knows by name and reputation.

Look at it this way, in a torunament, only about 15 percent of players make the money, but out of those only the top 9 players really make good winnings. The same can be applied to having poker as a career.

Other than that, I don't recommend going pro in Online Poker... The bottom fact is that you don't really know of the player on the other side of the monitor is even human.

Tournament competition is softer than cash. Live games are softer than online. It's best to treat the game as a hobby. If it becomes a profitable hobby, then more power to you.

But, if you're thinking about playing professionally, realize that there almost have to be many more professions that are less stressful, easier, and more enjoyable for you, where you'll make more money than you would at poker.

No matter how boring the game is, to be profitable, your brain is going to have to be firing on all cylinders, non-stop. You can play perfectly, all week long, but still have a profit of -$2000 for that week. It's not hard to lose when you're only a 60:40 favorite.

I forget where I heard it first but they say poker is a hard way to make an easy living.

Although there're is more weak players in live poker but online poker is convenient and we can play more hands than live poker so in my opinion, we will get more money when playing online if we play correctly.

I think it's very difficult. One needs an edge and large volume to win money in poker.

Reviewing hands and studying off the table works on developing your edge and volume is more about time one can commit to the game.

I personally have a tough time committing more time without compromising my game quality.
