Poker is definitely a mind sport AND gambling and does not deserve to be compared to slots!

Slots takes no thought at all other than which slots to play and which stake to play at and I guess how fast you press the play button between spins.

Unless of course that is how you play poker!

Now there is something think about for some people!

That got me thinking actually... I came to the conclusion that it depends on how you play - if you're playing a game without money involved, then it can be more of a mind game. If you're playing for money, mindfully and strategically, it's both. And if you're playing mindlessly (bad calls, maniac moves etc.), then it's pure gambling as no mind is involved

Do you see poker more as a gambling game or as a mind sport? I personally think the mental strategy makes it closer to chess than to slots.
Poker is definitely a mental game, like others have already said. Since it's a mental game, that distinction you made is key—comparing it to casino slot machines really drives the point home. Slots don't need any skill; you just click buttons and hope for the best.
What makes poker a mental game is the technique. The fundamentals of this technique are all about developing self-control, patience, concentration, the ability to handle losses, ego control, etc. Most poker skills involve controlling your own mind and mastering your emotions. So, it's a psychological game that aims to overcome not just luck as a practical element of gameplay, but also to overcome addiction.
A casino roulette player can easily afford to play out of addiction—to spend more than they have, to have no bankroll management, to gamble while drinking beer and hopping between roulette tables, slot machines, blackjack, and maybe even the poker variants. That's addiction. And as poker players, we can't afford to be addicted to the game.
Maybe—and here's a big side note—the professional poker players at the very highest level, the high-stakes crushers like Daniel Negreanu, Phil Ivey, or celebrities like Ronaldo and Neymar Jr.... maybe they can afford to play like it's an addiction. But every other poker player needs to keep in mind that addiction can and will cause serious psychological damage.
And that's precisely why poker is a game of the mind. Because we use our minds and technique to control our emotions. It's not like in the movies and TV shows where players go to a poker club to bet thousands of dollars (that they don't have), risking their lives. That isn't a "game of the mind"; that's straight-up addiction.
In line with responsible gaming, we have to recognize when we're getting addicted and step away from the tables. If we can't manage it ourselves, we should send an email to the poker site talking about our addiction, and for ethical reasons, they're obligated to block our account for a while. This applies to online poker. In live poker, we need to have that same clarity of mind and lucidity to avoid any form of gambling if we aren't in the right mental and emotional state—to make sure we don't bet more than we should, and to be able to walk away whenever we need to, whether we're winning or losing.
So yeah, poker can be a game of the mind... if you play with technique. If you play out of addiction or compulsion, then poker isn't much different from slot machines.

I pretty much switched from chess to poker. Chess is the absolute mind game, but I do see different aspects of mind game in poker. Chess you play with open cards and in poker you need to be sneaky and accept the luck factor and random failure even you have played great.

I believe that this question, as it was phrased, opens the door for poker to be seen as a game of chance.

POKER IS NOT A GAME OF CHANCE!

Here where I live, in brazil, there is a decree-law (3,688, of October 3, 1941) that defines games of chance as: "those whose outcome depends exclusively or predominantly on luck, and not on the skill or strategy of the player." I believe that this definition is very close to reality, regardless of the culture and world knowledge in which you, the reader, are immersed. I believe that the big problem lies in the fact that people have a mistaken understanding that games of chance are games where the luck factor exists. Well, the luck factor is present in everything. If such a statement were true, life itself would be a game of chance. But it seems to me that things are not quite like that.

Regarding whether or not it is a mind sport, IMAS (International Mind Sports Association) recognized poker as a mind sport in 2024. Still, there are debates about what constitutes mind sports. This debate is not limited to poker; it is a somewhat more generalized debate, also encompassing eSports and chess, for example. Those who disagree with the term argue that the term "sport" refers to "the methodical practice, individual or collective, of a game or any activity that demands PHYSICAL EXERCISE and skill, for the purposes of recreation, maintaining physical fitness and health, and/or competition; sport." (definition of the term in Portuguese).
I believe that spoken language is alive, changing and transforming over time, with new terms and words emerging to define new things. Dictionaries are like a registry of language; they merely record the use of a particular word or term, stating the meaning with which these terms or words are used in everyday life, without defining how they should be used. Therefore, it's natural that words and terms, such as "mind sport," appear and are used with meanings somewhat different from those found in usage records, in dictionaries.

For me, poker is a game of chance, just like slots. I don't consider poker to be a sport. But poker differs from most games of chance in that your skills and experience are not the least important factors in poker.

Poker is a game that requires a lot of mental work, as it demands analysis, probability, and a great deal of patience.
