Poker at College

Hey everyone, tomorrow is going to be my moving in day. I'm kind of sad, but I think I am even more excited.

Anyways, at orientation I met a few kids who said they definitely want to get a poker game started up. I was wondering if you guys think we would get in trouble for playing for real money?

In HS we would play every weekend (5nl or 10nl, or $5 tourney's) all of which were a blast, so I was hoping to start it up at college as well. I am probably just being to much of a worry wart.

I just want to know what you guys think of this. Thanks.

If you're living in a dorm you probably want to ask your RA (Resident Advisor) or whatever they call them at your school, just to be safe.

Have a great time at college! If you run into any snags know that your CC family is always here.

Don't ask the RA, because most of the time the "official" answer is going to be no, but 99% of RA's are not going to waste their time enforcing this dumb rule and we even had a few RA's play in our game with no problems. I mean even if you do get a bitch of an RA just use chips and tell them you're playing for play money and exchange the money out of sight. But more than likely the RA will think it's cool before they try to shut it down.

It always depends on the schools gambling policies, my advice is to make sure currency is outta sight, chips only on tables....

I wouldn't even ask - plausible deniability - "We didn't think it was a problem." And besides - it's probably not okay.

Be safe, not sorry. Check your state/county/whatever laws and assume the college will abide if it is considered illegal to have a home game.
It my be okay with the higher authorities and the college might still object.

Find a good location (more than one that moves around is a better idea) and use chips, not money, on the table. Keep the money out of site and not easily accessible.

Use some discretion - don't get cocky - be low key - don't attract attention.

The more money involved the more important it is to do this. You might start small but it will probably get bigger, not smaller.

Jesus you guys are being super paranoid. We have a regular 1/2 game at my school the pot usually has a few grand in it. OP is talking about a $5 buy-in ffs. You don't have to hide it, just don't do anything stupid. And if you actually are paranoid just play in someone's dorm room. The RA likely can't legally come into your room without your permission without probable cause. But they likely have better things to do like investigating legit noise complaints and underage alcohol/drug use than to come bust a $5 poker game not taking a rake. But seriously the RA's won't even care even if you told them about it unless they're huge douchebags.

I'd think > Don't ask because you're only playing for 'fun' (chips, no money involved). Who would ask when they're only playing for 'fun'?

Just be sure you don't have some complete whiner who cries after losing.

sounds easy to keep the money out of sight in the commons room, but what about after the game when you have to dvivy up the payouts? And if you do have it in the commons room, people are always walking by and will want to get in on the action (which could be a good or bad thing, depending how big you want it).

Sounds better just to have it in someone's dorm room, then you can throw back some beers and have some tunes playing etc...
Either that, or throw down hard in the commons room until you get booted; prolly get some cred in the residence if you were having high stakes poker sesh party throwdowns in there.

If you think about it though, poker has always been a hush hush behind closed doors type of thing.

Being a recent college grad, I wouldn't bother telling your RA about poker. I wouldn't put the games out in the open but you don't have to be too private about it. You could play pokerstars home games too.

Betting on, wagering on, or selling pools on any athletic event
Possessing on one’s person or premises (e.g. room, car, etc.) any card, book, or other device for registering bets
Knowingly permitting the use of one’s premises or one’s telephone or other electronic communication device for illegal gambling

there wouldn't be much of a trail if you make a club and play online on pokerstars home games...could just play the games on your laptops and exchange the $ other times. when i was in school people didn't want to play with me since i would win the game, and they wouldn't invite me back. that's why i started playing a lot on full tilt, there always was a game running!
