I don't drink during a poker session; alcohol and poker don't mix!

  1. I do not recommend drinking alcohol.
  2. Smoking is optional, I smoke myself.
  3. Eating is a must, as we usually play for 5 to 7 hours.
  4. When we listen to music, we always have some music playing in the background.

According to the questionnaire, I like to do all of them in moderation, except for smoking, as it helps me relieve anxiety during games and improves my concentration.

When I play poker, I almost always have music on and something to drink, usually water. As for eating, I prefer to do it before starting a session, but if it goes on for a long time, I’ll sometimes have a light snack in between.

Good afternoon everyone, poker and drinking.
Whenever you ask a question about poker, the word "it depends" will almost always appear in the answer.
Depending on your relationship with poker, if you treat poker like a job, drinking and playing poker is not recommended, as drinking will alter your perception of the game and could even lead you to make bad decisions or act impulsively.
Now, if you have poker as a hobby and play for fun, in that case, I don't see a problem.
Now, a professional poker player doesn't drink while playing and focuses all his attention on the tables, not even engaging in any other activity other than poker, not watching videos while playing, etc.
This is the right answer for this question. All other comments are irrelevant.

For me, it’s definitely listening to music. It’s the best way to stay in the zone and block out all the distractions, especially during a long session when the grind starts getting a bit repetitive. I find that a good playlist actually helps me keep my patience and prevents me from making impulsive moves just because I'm bored

I'll sometimes play a low-mind effort game on the side to control my boredom tilt, but other than that I try to avoid distractions

I always prepare food and lemonade, because in 5 minutes I can't go to prepare my lunch, I also like to listen to music.

As a rule, all of the above really interferes with playing properly, so I try to focus more on the game itself.

Hey cactus45! When there’s real money or a seat on the line, my go-to is total concentration. I might grab some peanuts to snack on and I definitely stay well-hydrated, but I stay far away from social media or movies—you can't afford to lose focus.

Regarding "vices" 🤪, I might enjoy maybe three fingers of neat whisky to relax, but that's it. However, my secret weapon when playing online from my rural hometown is "chimó", which is a traditional tobacco paste used by cowboys in my region. It keeps me sharp, though I’d never try it at a live casino; I can't imagine them letting me have a spittoon at my feet while sitting at a professional table! jajajaja.
At the end of the day, it's all about finding that mental balance that keeps you in the zone.

@cactus45! But if I’m feeling a bit like the legendary George Best, I might enjoy three bottle of neat whisky Johnnie Walker to relax. He once famously said: "I gave up drinking and gambling once—to this day it was the worst twenty minutes of my life," so I try not to be that radical! 🤪

Mixing poker and drinks can be fun socially, but it’s definitely a double-edged sword. A small drink or two can help you relax and enjoy the game, but alcohol can quickly impair judgment, reduce focus, and lead to costly mistakes.

Serious players usually avoid drinking while playing high-stakes or online sessions because even a little tilt or distraction can be very expensive. That said, in casual home games, a drink can add to the atmosphere and make the night more enjoyable—as long as everyone keeps it under control.

In short: drinks can be part of the fun, but if your goal is consistent profit or serious improvement, it’s best to keep a clear head at the table.
