Poker is a game that includes gambling , you put money on the line and sb loses , sb wins , but is a mental game as well that is based on skill and mathematical backround and these skills required are more important and prevail on the long run if used wisely and in the right way .
That's why some players , not few , have a lot of earnings from poker games , multi millions of $$$ like Phil Iphy , cause they know the ''demarcation line'' between gambling and mathematical statistical based playing game way based on rules and game theory .
Or they might not know all about theory , but the more knowledge they have , the lbest decisions the'll make , the less downswings the're gonna face , the more money the'll win :) .
The simple gamblers ? All their money are burned money or whatever they call them ,allways fish , even if they have some winnings on the short time term based on the factor luck .
So just ambling ?? I wouldnt say so , especially on a tournament :)

I totally agree with this. However I would take it one step further. In a Freeroll, you're not "gambling" your money; in the truest sense where a buy-in is concerned, you are testing your skills against the field of other players. You have the intention of winning the tournament; as does your opponents. Therefore in a Freeroll situation, you are truly playing a game of strategy, deception, intellect, and mental stamina. Same could be said for a regular tournament, but the delta is that you're not paying; gambling, your entry fee as you would have to in aforementioned tournament.

So, Freeroll = not gambling, Ring Game and Regular tournament = gambling.

;)

In my opinion the oker is a game of strategy, despite what many beginners believe, it is a game where short-term results are less important than decisions to get good results in the long run, but I recognize that a little Lucky to have.

That is the wonderful thing about poker ... it has everything a little ... bets, luck, math, strategy, emotions of all kinds ... is a fantastic game that can change your life from moment to moment for good or for wrong....! I have been able to see many videos and tournaments where it is proven that it is a game in which it takes many skills to win ... and it is not only luck ...!

Yes it's gambling because being the better player doesn't guarantee that you will win.

The best team/players in a sporting event don't always win.

A few simple definitions of gamble

play games of chance for money; bet:

bet (a sum of money) on a game of chance

take risky action in the hope of a desired result

So yes both are by definition a means of gambling

I would love to learn how to outsmart people in online cards
- because if you are playing with money - you are gambling , and everyone is betting against themselves and a computer game
- not outsmarting people , and definitely not outsmarting the software
Safe to say , any game is pretty much gambling , even physical sports - you gamble that you won't get hurt etc. You want to win.

Yes, but if the best team loses, it means that they got outplayed. In Poker, you can outplay your opponent and still lose. Therefore, it's gambling.

It's a zero sum game w/ risk involved as in day-trading, etc. Unfortunately I feel the fact it involves a deck of cards it comes with the negative stigma and often considered gambling.

I'm constantly explaining to friends/family that poker can be profitable as it is not a house game with the odds against you. Unfortunately, some just won't hear it. What are some ways you explain poker as being profitable to the skeptics?

:)I believe that every game that you put money in is bet.
Many say that poker is a sport, but I am of different opinion, sport is you playing tennis or football with friends to have fun, when you put money at risk, it will always be bet and you can win or lose.

Of course it is. The difference with others forms of gambling is that you can rig the odds to your favor by playing well and make it profitable. Still gambling though.

Life is a gamble as well. No risk no reward. I call poker calculated risk over time. In a sense it's gambling but I have never lost long term therefore I can't say the dreaded word...I'm sure your friend can relate if hes a winning player.

I have a friend that's arguing with me saying playing poker is not gambling and he even said investing in the stock markets is not gambling.

I say that poker is gambling. And investing in the stock market is also gambling. The skill involved is calculating risks to see what's your best move. But any game or anything that you're betting money is gambling!
Am I wrong? Please tell me if I am.

And also he said poker is 10% Luck. I strongly disagree with that. If you guys were to calculate the percentage of skill and luck in the game of poker what would it be? I's say it's impossible to calculate the percentage of luck and skill unless you are playing a hand. Then you can calculate the percentage of the skill and luck you need IN THE HAND. But in the whole game of POKER it's impossible to know. Am I also wrong about this?
Your question is same as ' is fire hot?

If you never deposit on a site and build a bankroll with free rolls then it is less of a gamble.

Money risked=gambling.
If it wasn't gambling then no one would win. It would always be the same.
