No, practically everyone can learn to play poker with due desire and other circumstances. And in chess, it takes talent to become a master.

Is Poker Harder Than Chess?

No, Chess is harder than poker...

In poker, anyone can win a tournament..
In Chess only a pro can win a tournament..

I am a chess player with an international FIDE rating of 2120. There is no equivalent term of 'tilt' in chess. Because, equivalent of bad beats don't exist in chess. There is something called oversight, where a player makes a mistake that isn't expected of his skill level. But, that is not bad beat.

Poker is far more emotionally demanding. Now, I am not stating with conviction that poker is tougher. High level poker is somewhat mechanical, like high level chess. In chess the best players rack their brains only during 5-6 positions in a 60 move game. Similarly, in poker the best players play on an average 20-30% of their hands and rack their brains in 3-4 hands. I am not too sure, as I am a beginner in poker.

In an any case, what is your opinion?
Chess is more complicated and needs higher intelligence level than Poker. However, poker has an element of variance which makes is more emotionally challenging than chess.

Chess has no variance. Totally different feel, imo.

Hello poker fans,

Poker vs Chess

I play both poker and chess but never thought to compare the two. The reason for this is that one calculation is more mathematical and the other is more combinational. Added to that, one has a huge element of luck that is enjoyed because of the probability involved and the other has limitations of mental capacity and creativity of your opponent or even mistakes or oversights. The element of luck is almost zero in chess but really high in poker.

In both games, skill, emotional control and preparation are very important. The more you engage in this, the better your chances of emerging victorious. I am of the opinion that chess is more mentally demanding and involved. In poker, you can fold in a tough spot and wait for another hand that is easier to get a read but in chess, you absolutely must get out of a bind or else, more often than not your game is over.

Both games are thrilling and require different skillsets. I appreciate each for their unique properties, poker for reading people while making your own plays hard to read and maximizing your chip stack by making correct betting decisions - chess for visualization and strategic execution of one's plan. The two games are filled with psychological warfare, chess against one and poker against many - making poker a game with a very scary minefield that requires more adjustments to be made in a short time frame.

Chess or poker, get ready for a few surprises - whether luck smiles on you in poker or creativity and innovation rear their ugly head - you do need to fasten your seatbelt for the ride!

Certainly chess is easier than poker, because in chess there is no luck factor, which in poker can reach 60%

In chess u cant bluff and win by random river card.
In poker u cant predict which hand u will have.
Chess is more about brain logic, poker is more about feeling and luck :)

simply chess is knowledge and skill in poker, you have to have knowledge, skill, and a little bit of lucky.

I don't play chess, but chess is much more strategic than poker, in chess, if you make a mistake and your opponent knows about it, then this is a 100 percent victory, in poker - an opponent's mistake leaves him a chance to win.

Great question. I'm not good at chess so I'd say becoming a good chess player is alot harder than becoming a good poker player. Now becoming a great poker player or chess player is the real question here so in my opinion I'd say chess would be harder to get to elite status

One thing I believe I read somewhere was that Chess has already been "solved" however with current GTO strategies poker is taking this way too but not really in the near future the game will be 'solved'.

I’ve always thought of chess as an intellectually demanding game and poker as an emotionally demanding game.

Poker is harder, because you can be as smart as a fox, play without making mistakes and still can lose due to bad luck.

Poker is easier to learn the basics, however both are hard to dominate!

I think poker is easier than chess but is required much more mindset. You will study the game but that's limited, someday you will have learned everything about poker strategies. But study about your opponents is eternal.

I would say in chess there is no luck component and it is based solely on skills. Especially if you're playing at a high level, it might be a lot more complex, so many games end in draws and often only the best, like Magnus Carlsen and co. are able to achieve victory in these games.

I think it is harder to win in poker than in chess just because you don't have perfect information in poker. There are too many variables, a lot of luck involved and sometimes the unpredictability of your opponents makes it harder to win in the short run, but the short run could be way, waaaaayy longer than you think. Whereas in chess you have perfect info and a higher skilled player will always win over a lower-skilled player. That's not always the case in poker.

I've played chess as an amateur and now I play poker as an amateur, the only thing that's similar is the use of math, the rest is all different, I think luck in poker makes a big difference in long-term gameplay.

That's not even a comparison, chess is a lot harder than poker. mainly because It doesn't involve luck and it's 100% skill.
