Hello poker fans,
I play both poker and chess but never thought to compare the two. The reason for this is that one calculation is more mathematical and the other is more combinational. Added to that, one has a huge element of luck that is enjoyed because of the probability involved and the other has limitations of mental capacity and creativity of your opponent or even mistakes or oversights. The element of luck is almost zero in chess but really high in poker.
In both games, skill, emotional control and preparation are very important. The more you engage in this, the better your chances of emerging victorious. I am of the opinion that chess is more mentally demanding and involved. In poker, you can fold in a tough spot and wait for another hand that is easier to get a read but in chess, you absolutely must get out of a bind or else, more often than not your game is over.
Both games are thrilling and require different skillsets. I appreciate each for their unique properties, poker for reading people while making your own plays hard to read and maximizing your chip stack by making correct betting decisions - chess for visualization and strategic execution of one's plan. The two games are filled with psychological warfare, chess against one and poker against many - making poker a game with a very scary minefield that requires more adjustments to be made in a short time frame.
Chess or poker, get ready for a few surprises - whether luck smiles on you in poker or creativity and innovation rear their ugly head - you do need to fasten your seatbelt for the ride!
