Question about Raising

Ok heres the scenario. You raise the pot, your opponent who has more chips than you pushes all his chips in WITHOUT SAYING RAISE OR ANYTHING and its still considered a raise. Ive seen this in casinos and on tv. Wouldnt it be considered a call since he didnt say raise?
Yet recently I played in this local charity game where the guy next to me raised his opponent without saying raise and the rest of the table said that it was just a call because he didnt say raise. When is it considered a call without saying raise and when is it considered a raise without saying raise?

I think most places rules are that if you put more than 1 chip in than you don't have to say raise, so like if you put 2x500 chips in front of you its a raise to 1000.
If you put 1 chip in front of you than it is just a call not a raise, unless you state you are raising. So like if a player in front of you bets 200, and you throw 1 500 chip in without saying raise, than it just becomes a call.

I'm pretty sure the official rules state, that if you throw all of your chips into the middle of the pot, without saying raise or call, and they are clearly in the middle of the pot without your hands still touching them, it is considered an all-in. I agree with the previous poster in the sense that if you only throw one chip out there without saying raise or call, it is assumed that you are just calling. I don't think you need to verbally say raise, so long as it is crystal clear that raising is your intention.

Thats it.

1 chip = call (dealer is expected to sort out change for you)
many chips = raise

If you push all your chips in in one motion, it is considered a raise (or all-in). The action of pushing your chips over the line is just as binding as verbal announcement.

I've Played In Casinos where I've had to State a Raise Prior to my actions...For instance in Windsor Casino, there were many Limpers and I had AA on the Button, I had to state to the Dealer "Raise", then how much, and so forth and so on...

Now in Lac Lamy Casino in Quebec Hall same rules Applied...

That would be the only casino/card room I have ever played in that had such a rule......but there are many funky local card room rules out there

Roberts rules :-

13. A player who bets or calls by releasing chips into the pot is bound by that action and must make the amount of the wager correct. (This also applies right before the showdown when putting chips into the pot causes the opponent to show the winning hand before the full amount needed to call has been put into the pot.) However, if you are unaware that the pot has been raised, you may withdraw that money and reconsider your action, provided that no one else has acted after you. At pot-limit or no-limit betting, if there is a gross misunderstanding concerning the amount of the wager, see Section 14, Rule 8.

15. If you put a single chip in the pot that is larger than the bet, but do not announce a raise, you are assumed to have only called. Example: In a $3-$6 game, when a player bets $6 and the next player puts a $25 chip in the pot without saying anything, that player has merely called the $6 bet.

House rules take precedence.

The norm, however, is to conform to Robert's Rules of Poker
