A coworker wants to know what this type of "foul" is called, and I can't for the life of me think of it:

Live poker, someone who, when it's his turn, says "I call.. <watches his opponents>... and RAISE!"

It is. Any bet must be made in one motion. Whether in action, as in moving chips in, or verbally, as in, "I call your bet, and raise you." Both are string bets, whether the intent was to shoot an angle or not.

Horrible foul. This causes a lot of grief at home games. I have a friend who does it at every single game. He does not play with us often. I never invite him. Depending on the host, they may invite him.

Definitely a string bet...

You might address the issue at the beginning of your games by informing everyone that if they state "I call....", it is a call even if they follow it with "... and raise". While lots of people do it accidentally, there are some who try to get away with it while they mine for information.

string bet I hate people that do this. One way to get the info this person wants is just put his call out there and hold with his raise still in his hand to see what the table does. This is legal but still kinda shady.

I thought this kind of 'verbal string bet' wasn't supposed to be allowed?

Or is it down to house rules?

I run in to a lot of players new to live casino games will say "I see your $10 and raise you $20" Than they are puzzled as to when the dealers calls a string bet and makes them only call.

What amazes me is they will do it again even after they have been told.

I have been noticing that it happens with drinkers. I have played with a few guys who get so drunk that their reflexes are so slow.
