Should I play this live flipament?

So apparently there's a $40 live tournament taking place near where I live on Saturday at 2pm.
Notes:
-this is a "fundraiser" so only about half the prize pool will actually be in play
-there will be about 90 players participating
-an amateur is setting up the structure, so it may be far from ideal :/
+I feel that I will be one of the best players there
+I would like to get some more live experience
+a lot of donks will be playing in this
+they'll sell food there

Those 2 reasons alone should be enough to make you go. Go take down some $$, enjoy yourself, get some good food while you're at it.

I'd play it for fun and not take any great expectations. If you get donked out, well, you've got that warm fuzzy feeling of supporting a charity, right?

As in, is playing this tournament -$EV? I'd say it probably is. Lots of donks to fight your way through, and only half a prize pool. Not promising.

That would be enough to get me there, -EV or not.

Really depends man. Is $40 going to hurt your pocketbook? If you can afford to lose $40 no problem, then go ahead.. any live experience is good for your game, and if you think you stand a good chance.. why not?

If you can't easily spare $40.. then no, not a good idea.

heck yes , it will be fun , $40 bucks is like a BR online but I would do it in a heartbeat. food , drink , poker , doing it live with all donks , I mean donks are regular fun people that just don't play much. you'll probably have a few things go a little whack but it's for fun and charity. never know you may get a nice donation.

No idea what the blind structure will be? Can you find out before hand? If it's decent and the charity is worthwhile why not.

Seems to be the only problem; I talked to the host and he says he is not sure what the blind structure will be (yet?), as he is an amateur and probably doesn't even know what blind structure really means.

They have these around here occasionally, never had one at a time convenient for me, but can't see any real down side, experience is experience.
The ones I see are set up by folks who know the game, tne undecided blind structure would make me wonder.

Might be worthwhile to direct him to a site like homepokertourney.com so he can get some good ideas for the tournament. Tell him if he ever wants to have another one after this one, he'll be better off to do some work to run the 1st one properly.

Also, apparently it's going to be 8 players per table (wtf), and final table gets paid, so I guess it won't be completely impossible for me to make some money granted I play my A-game.

If it were me, I would volunteer to help set it up as long as it didn't keep me from playing.

Yes, play. I love live tournaments and everytime I play (2-3 times a week) I learn something new that improves my game. 2 weeks ago I would place in the 20ish range out of 40-50 people. This week I've had 2 15 place finishes. Not something to brag about obviously, but I have gotten a lot better.

you should totally go. first, it is a great chance to improve your live game, as you said you wanted to do that, and then if you are one of the best, you may even end up in the money. and if you don't, oh well - money for charity.

This thing is probably going to be massively -EV with only half the prize pool actually going to the players and probably an horrible structure to get the tournament done in less than 5 hours but if you need live play experience that badly, play in it but don't expect that superior play is going to help you a lot.

See it as a fee for live play + an expensive scratch ticket.

I think you should definitely play. Just to get yourself out there and playing. Live play (imo) is so different from online. I like the suggestion of offering to help with the blind structure, or steering the host to the website mentioned above. You already know that it's probably not going to be the most ideal live situation, but my question is, why not? (Unless you can't afford the $40.)

What is your vicinity to some casinos? I live in California, so an Indian casino is never far away. Not sure what the case is in Canada, though. If you have any in your area, I would recommend checking it out, and joining one of their smaller tournaments once or twice a month. Hopefully there will be more people there to play some serious poker, unlike the charity event, where it's sure to be a donkfest (and many people who really don't have a clue).
