One day in poker is 90% of luck and 10% of skill. One year in poker is 10% of luck and 90% of skill. I think this story is true.

I completely agree with you in essence. But just for these situations, apparently people came up with a separate name - luck.:)

The real answer is: Poker is 1/3 luck, 1/3 skill and 1/3 attitude in this exact order

Actually, the luck is firsty in this game. If you a not getting good hands how you can win ? But probably you are not lose a lot also if you skill player. So poker is pretty balanced but I think rules must be transformed in the future.

Lame

This is the dumbest thread. When you win your skilled but when you lose is bad luck. Skill really reflects between a novice and a pro. Of coarse as you get better if you do that is the skill become closer. Once you've reached where everyone is at expert level I don't think it's as much of the skill as important as in getting playable cards in a tourney. I've never seen a card dead pro win a tourney. He is still as skilled as before so why wouldn't he win? Yes he might steal a few blinds and even bluff a few hands but he not going to win.

Another good example is when the player goes through is a down swing. There would be no such thing if skill prevailed over luck. I don't know one circuit pro that hasn't been on a down swing.. These are the best of the best.

Everyone like to bring up it the same people at the final table. Yes these are very skilled players. Most entrants in tourneys are people who are maybe seasoned but not experts. So they have a slight edge. But people like moneymaker win and never win again. That's the real norm. Because the circuit players have backers they play in way more tourneys than the average Joe. This will mean on an average they should get in the money more often.

Easy for me. Before I read a poker book or a strategy article, luck was a major factor in any success I had. Now the reverse is true, even more so in downswings. Knowing that I need to maintain my bankroll management is skill, not luck. Having patience, discipline, and not chasing losses is skill, not luck. And trying to transition from Carbon to ACR will definitely test my skill limits more than my luck factor. As the great Branch Rickey once declared, "Luck is the residue of design".

Skill or luck

Hello
According to me
Its a mix of both
You cant survive only on either of the 2
Bcoz even if you go heads up AA vs AA and you could lose to a Flush
You call that Hard Luck
So keep your energy positive in play and keep going

Thanks

A big joint like WPT is gonna look at your stats and use an #algoriggem to maximize their business model, imo
I played for 2 mos, saw they had it scammed, imo, then quit playing but didnt cancel the monthly fee.
Now I'm playing and you can easily beat me by playing every draw you have when I'm ahead post flop. Anything to showdown, they have me losing with better hands roughly 80 percent of the time, because their algoriggem figures I won't cancel, imo
It stinks but you have make adjustments.

This I can relate. Seems the tighter I get the better my hands the more elaborate the loss. I've never lost so many boats to boats even a quad to quad as I have this month.

Given the current trends in the development of poker think of the success depends on more and more, the skill fades into the background, even in live tournaments meters installed for a count of 30 seconds per move, there's no skill ))

I think the exact opposite

A lot of such questions almost everyday here, you should try and see for yourself.. In my opinion

Tournament poker = pure luck
Cash game = a bit smaller luck factor

If you got a good read on your opponents, especially with a hud online.. My favorite HUD feature is getting late-stage high blinds and using the button late position steal percentage. You can make a killing off a 3 bet in these positions where they have a high percentage.

I only play cash games live, to many eagles or rocks around online with HUDS and brains.
One exception would be Omaha Hi-Lo 08. That's where pots get scooped.

It's in the identification...

Identify luck.

That is the actual skill that I respect the most at a poker table. Some people can't tell when the other player is getting lucky and lose out hard core. When you see it happening, you really know what you are doing.

Identifying opportunities, or in another word "lucky" instances and rationing out the chips accordingly is what odds are all about, which is a math skill.

The two aren't necessarily separable.

I believe that it is 40% luck and 60% skill. You need to have some luck go your way to win a Tournament. When you catch a 2 outer with pocket Kings vs Aces. You had bad luck getting Kings to begin with and had good luck when you caught a 2 outer against Aces. There is a lot of unseen luck in poker.

During any poker session, what percentage of your won pots are suck outs?

That would pretty much tell ya how often luck is a factor. It might vary from person to person depending on how wide their opening range is.

Conservative players need less luck because they go into the pot with strong cards most of the time. Loose players need more luck and will experience more luck because they're not only playing with weaker cards but they're also in more pots.

I prefer to think of it as "Good fortune" rather than luck however. If a low percentage card hits your hand on the turn or river, your fortunate that it came. So that's good fortune....not luck.

The reason I don't like the word "Luck", is because it completely disregards any amount of skill that I may have applied earlier in the hand.

Let's say I 3-bet somebody and it persuades him to fold preflop. After the flop I hit some guy with a check raise and he lets his cards go. The last guy to act goes all in and I call. He has me beat, but I hit an 8% card on the river for the win.

If I didn't 3-bet the guy pre flop or check raise the other guy, their hands might have beat the 8% river card.

The word "Luck" disregards all of this and just sums it up into a convenient perspective...."Meh, you just got lucky."

Regardless of how well you play, when up against a field of hundreds,
some things must go your way.
More helpfully, when your all in.

You can be highly skilled or on a super heater, then lose to an idiot to become the bubble boy.

Once I had a great run to the final field, and for some reason played ultra tight the whole time.
Unfortunately, I went card dead and bb/sb moved me right out of the competition.

( I could of divided up some of that blind money and used it for a few bluffs, speculative calls or marginal pre-flop hands)

When you have a few tables of good to great poker players, they are all employing similar skills and strategies, and since skill evens out, I think actually luck can play a much bigger role than some think.
