Other players slowroll because they don't want to reveal their hand to the other players at the table.  So they wait until you show your hand, and that way, if they don't have you beat, they can muck and not show.  If they DO have you beat, then they reveal their hand so they can win the pot.

The way most casinos prevent this is to have a specific rule about who must show first.  Some casinos enforce this rule vigorously, others do not... your main defense is to know what the rule is and when you get to a showdown on the river, simply say to your opponent, "You have to show first".  The dealer will always back you up, and in many casinos, the dealer will actually point to the player and order them to show their hand.  Other casinos the dealer will simply say something like "lets see the cards gentlemen (or ladies)", or they'll just say "show me a winner", and this is where it benefits you to know the proper order of showdowns.  Live poker is a game of information so these sort of slowrolls are pretty common.  The players who are intentionally slowrolling just to make someone angry, those are just dickheads, pardon my language.  LOL  Its difficult but you should just take these players in stride and not give them the emotional reaction they are seeking.  Don't play their game, play your own!
