Someone announced that they had a straight in a hand. This was a play money tournament, and a low play money steps tournament, with a buy in of a thousand, which you can get easily on full tilt. Is there anything I should do? is this against the rules?

It's maybe a violation of one of their site rules:

5. Players and observers may not discuss a hand until the action is complete. Discussing cards discarded or hand possibilities is not allowed.

If it's a player that's actually in the hand at the time though I'd be surprised if any action was taken. Who's to say he's telling the truth anyway? Giving your opponent misinformation about the strength of your hand is such an integral part of poker and I don't think anyone would take this as a serious violation of the rules.

A player that's folded saying that they would have had a straight, whether it's true or not, is a completely different matter.

You probably can't do anything about it since it is a play money table. If it was real money I'd look into it a little harder, but the site still probably wouldn't do anything about it.

I think the rules are only that players no in the hand can discuss their hand. I know if I'm playing with someone I like to lie about my hand. Sometimes I even tell the truth!

I've actually turned my cards over in live games if the pot is big enough and I don't want to get sucked out on. I even did it once when I had the nuts and I was playing some slow idiot who took forever before folding. They had called time on him like three times already and I knew there was zero chance of him calling.

I'm pretty sure that this is both illegal in any casino, and bad poker. No offense.

As for OP, you could normally send a complaint to support, but as many others have said, it is unlikely they would take action as this took place on a play money table.

Sue him in small claims play court. I think the limit is 800 play money chips so if you want the whole thing you gotta get a play lawyer and go to play Superior court.

Not true if it's a cash game - it's only tournaments that don't allow you to show cards. Most live cash games will allow it if there's only two of you in the pot.

Agree absolutely on the second point though. Exposing the nuts, legal or not, is just bad. Even if the guy is stalling 99% of the time you've got to give him the chance to call. Showing him the nuts before he's decided is just throwing money away.

Yeah, I thought that this was against just about any tournament rules. I have politely reminded many a player of this online. Sometimes a player inadvertently tells what he or she folded before the hand is over. Usually a player attempts to mislead or not about their own cards. Don't do it - uncool. I have never reported anyone though.

Normally this would be against the rules, I don't know if they would care if it was for play chips or not. If they do it in the play money they might be doing it in real mone games.

From the little of the official rules that I know of, you can lie but never tell the truth about your hand.

there should not be any rule about this. you not talking about anyones cards, but yourself, you might be bluffing and have k high, strategy

i sometimes say what hand i have, to see what reaction i get, and sometimes i lie!

This. I always thought you were allowed to lie about your hand. Just not allowed to say what you actually have. This could be just cash games.

OP e-mail FT, get your money back and hopefully they are baned for life both online and in casinos worldwide. Play money or not this must be taken seriously. A few years in prision would help too but I don't think they can do that.
