Stop betting when a player is all in!

Why is that people bet when someone is all in and the side pot has nothing? your supposed to just check it down and try to knock the other players. I cant count the number of times a player bets, i fold then they just double, or triple up the player who is all in. Just moronic.

You don't have to check it down, although players frequently do if its the late stages of a tournament and each player knocked out means an increase in the money remaining players can win. Personally if I think I have the best hand I'll always continue betting and try to get maximum value if there are other players with stacks left to play after one player is all in. Usually you get called especially if you bet 1/2 of the pot or so because there's so much invested in it already. But if I only have a pair then I'll happily check it down, but might call if I get raised again.

I will check down marginal hands but if I am pretty sure i have the best hand,I am betting.The idea for me is to win all the chips and bust everyone.If you check down the winning hand,didnt you miss value bets?If he uses those chips from your missed bets to beat you,then it was a mistake.
I have seen people bet 2nd pair or straight draws and I do think this is foolish and ends up doubling or tripling the short stack.

Your job as a poker player is to put yourself in a situation to win. By checking it down with another player you are only giving yourself one more hand you have to beat at the end. If you are the initial raiser and you allow another player with chips to stay in and see a cheap river, you are only doing yourself a disservice. Checking it down doesn't win hands, raising it does. You kind of answered your own question.

I'd have to agree with everyone else so far, just checking down the pot gives you no advantage at all. Like you said, the other person bets and you fold, that increases his odds of winning the pot and that means he is going to make more chips then you in those situations.

If I have a hand I am not going to check it down. That money is dead. I will try to get as many chips as I can in a tourney. Also, if there is a side pot, I will try to take that down. That covers myself a lot of times.

Say for example you raise for 1500 chips PF. You get two callers. One is all in for his 1000 chips. The other calls my bet. That leaves 1000 chips in the side pot. I will try at times to take the pot down on the flop. If my hand misses and the all in guy wins I still have the side pot so I don't take a big hit.

Checking it down is something which certainly you would do if your hand was not the nuts. But if you have the nuts then why would you check it down.

no OP, stop thinking you have to check it down because of some unspoken etiquette that you imagine everyone should uphold! you're "supposed" to check it down? no, that's not the case at all. you're supposed to make the best play for yourself. most people's point of reference for this practice is televised final tables. at that point in a large tournament, eliminating a single player is worth tons in equity, so maximizing your chance to do that is often (often, but not always) in your best interest. hence why checking it down is so common in that situation

however there are many situations where protecting your hand from the other player or getting more value from your hand is WAY more important than slightly increasing your chances to eliminate 1 player. way, way, way more important! frankly i'm sick of people who whine about this but don't really have a clue

You would think that someone who keeps pushing all in is going to lose eventually. It's all about chance, try to play the cards that are dealt! It sounds easy to just fold especially with nothing in the pot, but when that aa is in front of you- what can you do..........

if this is a satellite with 19 players left and 18 players qualify for another tourney, then what you're saying is correct... everyone should check to knock out the all in player. However a regular tourney / non bubble situation is different. Lets say you have Ace high. The all in player has King high, and one other player in the hand has 33. The board is something like 10 J 6. If you bet, you can likely get the 33 to fold his hand, making it a greater chance of you winning the pot since it is your Ax vs the all ins Kx. If the guy hits a K on the turn, well he would have beaten the 33 anyways so its still irrelevant.

I think this about sums it up perfectly! If your hand was good enough to call the other players all in, why is it not good enough to try and win the hand by betting instead of checking?

i have to agree with cardsharkrob. lastnight, someone went all in and myself and one other called. i was looking at a gut shot straight, and the other (non all in) player went all in. so i folded. long story short i would have caught the straight, but the all in player won the pot from the lower end straight. this was at a final table, and if he would have checked it down we would have knock out another player, and placement would have gone up. btw i had (k,q he had 7,8 on the board 8,9,j turn was a 4, river was a 10)

maybe this is just because I'm a beginner and I have that kind of luck, but whenever somebody goes all in, I tend to never fold because I want to try and back off the short stack. Am I right?

most times you only check it down when your at the final table, and it means you will move up in money. most other times its fair game, and you may want the other person out of the pot.

Sometimes they bet because they have the winning hand, I prefer to check it down so as not to double up the all in but if I am that all in player might like it lol.

wasn't too far behind but not going to take the risk on a belly buster. ah well. i guess that's poker. just thought it was silly to make a bluff when a player is all in when there is only 9 of us left. not only that but trippling someone up was silly.

The only time to positively check it down is when you are in a qualifying tournament and you can win a ticket to a future tournament (eg. 21 players remaining - 20 players advance and a short stack close to the bubble goes all-in, then you are basically trying to eliminate him and you have 20 winners - there is no need to increase your stack by further betting).
When this situation does not exist you might want to check if your opponent checks before you and you are not sure if you have the best hand, but if you have the nuts, definitely do not check it down.

if the player is all in then u are not giving him any extra by betting but if i got the nuts i bet it to try and eliminate 2 ppl but i do make my decesion on this matter deppending on the sistuation

I have bet the winning hand in this situation and taken a fair amount of abuse for it in a neighborhood game, and again in a local tournament.

Rather than defend my position to the complainers, I let them go on thinking I don't know better. The dumber my opponent thinks I am the better.

Stop betting when a player is all in!
