Strengths and weaknesses: list your top of each for online poker

I would be curious to hear what people think of as their biggest strength and their biggest weakness when it comes to playing online.

My biggest strength is that I am able to fairly quickly judge who at my table is a really foolish player. I then try to get into a hand with them and wrangle a double up. What I look for are players who raise a lot preflop, who shove post flop on an innocuous board and whose chip stacks fluctuate wildly.

My biggest weakness is not being able to recognize sets. I don't know how many times I've had an A-Q or something similar and lost when the board comes up A-8-5 and the person flips over pocket 8s or pocket 5s. Any tips on how to identify a set probability?

I recognize sets.. but only after they've slowed played them all streets and I shove all in to lose at showdown. I hate, hate when people slow play. I usually make a note on them just so I can do it to them in the future.

But as for weaknesses, when tournaments get down to 15ish-more-til-the-bubble-breaks, I generally just fold, even pocket aces or kings (if someone with a bigger stack than me shoves, that is). It's a bad strategy, and more often than not I blind down to a below-average stack when the bubble does finally break. I just hate putting myself at risk when it's so close. Playing not to lose vs playing to win is something I really need to work on.

Cash games are also a weakness. I can't profit from them *at all*. Was talking to a friend recently and he said, "Just bet when you have it." But to me, the other players should recognize this after a few hands. Have been reading some books lately though, trying to get better.

As far as strengths- not tilting. I see people get angry and just aimlessly shove repeatedly after losing a big hand- I try to avoid that. Every hand is different.

Just so you know, there is nothing wrong with that strategy. That's called setting a trap and letting you fall into it. It's not always a good idea because you are giving people free cards to make a better hand (particularly like a straight or a flush), but if you have a good idea what your opponent has and you think your set is good, it is a good strategy. check-check-shove is a worse strategy and something a lot of inexperienced players do.

Slow rolling occurs after all the betting has been done and then someone with the winning hand waits forever to show it, acting like they don't have anything. THAT is annoying.

This is my second biggest weakness. Particularly when I play a hand perfectly and have my opponent read like a book and he lucks out on the river. The other night I was playing 05/10 at Carbon and the guy to my left was constantly 3betting before the flop and then C-betting after the flop. I decided to get into a hand with him. Well, I eventually get A-Q and call his pre-flop raise. He has K-J suited. The flop comes up A-Q-7 rainbow and he goes all in immediately. Of course I call, and then he rivers a 10 for the straight. He was a 9 % chance and won. Argh, that crap drives me to drink!

Really hard to read set as well for me.

For tournament, I will pay them off.

For cash, I will somehow be cautious and minimize losses.

Biggest strength: Not tilting.

Biggest weakness: Tournaments. I've never been a big fan, so I've never taken the time to really improve.

My choices would probably change depending on what context I apply to the question. For instance, in terms of being a consistent winning player, one of my strengths is that I don't much care about moving up in levels. So, I mainly play at levels where I have won consistently.

Otoh, in the context of optimizing or meaningfully increasing my win rate, not caring about moving up could easily be considered a weakness.

Strength- playing MTTs pretty decently. It's all about patience and letting go of cards that you thought were the best. You always live another day as long as you have a chip on the felt.

Weakness- definitley falling for set traps as you said. Playing above my BR (i'm working on that now) and not studying poker enough off the felts. Also, gotta work on my final table play. I think I get too excited, but even though I drop out 6th or 7th, I still feel great, and it gives me more confidence in my MTT play.

Yeah, trapping is a part of the game, obviously you're trying to win your opponent's chips, but still. I always make notes of them just for future reference so I can deliberately raise their big blinds all in, etc. I mean, it tends to be more forgivable in tournaments, but it's borderline disrespectful in cash games. Flopping 4 of a kind and check calling every street. Such a dick move.
