The only poker player to win the main tournament of the world series of poker three times as a result of a tournament game.
At the moment, I think the best poker player right now is
Daniel Negreanu is a Romanian poker player who has won over $30,000,000 in tournaments. The calculation takes TheHendonMob's private data. A successful poker player has been awarded the title of best player for several years in a row.

When johnny and Stu were winning the main event there were a lot less entries than nowadays so not really comparable

Stu was very talented and he proved it with several good results, not only in the Main Event. It is always hard to say, if someone is or was the best, but he was certainly one of the greatest players of all time.

As far as I know 2-7 was very popular back then. I once heard a story that they even thought about playing 2-7 in the Main Event and not Holdem. Not sure if this is true though.Poker_Mike said:

I very much enjoy watching footage of him play. He was very likely the best at the time and is probably one of the greatest players, ever.

Stu's inner demons got the best of him. He had a major weakness for nose candy. He also couldn't keep away from -EV bets. No one could function with a habit like his.G0930 said:

Most dominant poker player ever. No one has come close to what he achieved. The guy was feared by the best in the world playing in cash games and tourns.
Only one to win 3 WSOP world titles, Moss didn't play and win 3. And Stu would have probably won a 4th if he hadn't been high and gotten so blinded off at the 1990 Main Event.
Won 3 SBOP titles in 84, 88 and 89 which was the 2nd most prestigious poker title at the time.
Guy wasn't a one show pony who just specialized in one game like a lot of people today either. He was beating the best in the world at the other big games of the day like Stud and low ball.
Lets put it this way, everyone knew he had "problems" but he was so good that people were still willing to back him in a tourn while playing the best players in the world!! That's how good he was.
He would have had a blast if he made it to the poker boom with all that soft money coming into the games.
And online, lolol. . . those kids analyzing people's games using software and looking for opponent ranges and combinations, blockers. . Stu was doing that stuff back in the 1960s-early 70s. That's how he was able to have a clue what his opponents were holding while beating the best gin rummy players in the world.
Guy was getting black listed from all the Vegas casinos blackjack tables for being able to count the cards as well.
He did the same for poker hands. That's why he would have been one of the few old time poker players that would have been dominating the scene during the poker boom.

There's a book about stu ungar called 'the man behind the shades' and I highly recommend it.
One of the stories that sticks in my memory is how he was bankrolled by the mafia to play the best gin rummy player at the time. Stu ungar wiped the floor with him and I'm pretty sure the guy disappeared from the scene altogether he was that humiliated. I also believe he was only 15-17 years old at this point.
Another one was how his largest ever single win came from betting on horses.
It's been a while since I've read this book so maybe a little fuzzy on the details.

You can't compare Tournament winnings from the 70s/80s to them today.Poker is way more accepted in society than ever before, the WSOP has thousands of entries every year.
in the 80s not even 100!!!! people joined the fun. way easier to win that way...
