Good Morning! How many players wonder there even variance in poker, or just is just excuses of many players or social media wonder if that even exists.

I can assure you that it exists.This is really painful especially when it lasts hard and you like to play cash game.You lose all your flips, AA, KK.a real descent into hell.

This variance you speak of, tell us more. You mean to say that even if you are 98% to win a hand, you could lose? That AA could get cracked? Say it isn't so!

Pretty much variance is just part of life, even in poker.

Variance

Variance is a part of life. And especially so in poker. There are some who believe that our inability to predict the future is simply a lack of information. I believe this is true to a large extent, but you also have to remember that our ability to access the information we don't have many times is virtually impossible. (Like the random number generators that give out cards in online poker). So since we do not have total knowledge, we can experience variance as bad luck.

Still, I think most people complain more than they should.

If there was no variance in poker then Phil Hellmuth would win every time and poker wouldn't be a game anyone would play.

Yes variance is definitely present in poker but it is the same for everyone and it makes the game interesting. If there was no variance better players would win every time and poker would not be so interesting.

You know how Aces beats Kings only 82 % of the time? That 18% of the time Kings beat Aces, which is 18% of the time, is variance. If there was no such thing as variance, Aces would beat Kings 100% of the time. It's the universe balancing itself out because for every 100 times you are dealt aces and up against kings, you are mathematically guaranteed to lose 18 of those times.

I was under the impression that variance, in poker terms, was just a fancy word for luck.

If that's the case, then yes, absolutely there is luck involved in poker. You have to get lucky and avoid getting unlucky!

I doubt it is guarenteed mathematically 18 Times. It is only the most likely outcome. But if you would count your next 100 it not guarenteed 18 😉

My opinion

Poker is a game of luck when two people play to the same level. You usually have more then one play to that level so the odds of you winning go up exponentially. If your really looking for government help as far as being a gamer. It is pogo.com. Most people have to get badges. Some dress thier mini in fine things. Others get badges so they can school them in there personal game. Most of witch don't require luck.

Sometimes it's easy to forget that poker is gambling. That is the exact reason why it's so often in casinos. And the variance is what makes it a gambling game

Variance is the reason for a bankroll and the reason to play within that bankroll. You keep many buyins built up so you can over time beat variance. You try to make the right decisions every hand and over time the right decisions defeat variance. Poker pros is this not the main idea of playing poker. Not getting lucky but make profitable decisions over and over.

So, today in a live $400 local tournament, I make the right call of an allin bet on the turn, and the river gives the bettor one of his 2 outs to knock me out of the tournament. So even though I made the right call at the time, I still drive home early with empty pockets.

So variance is at play. I made the best play i could, the other player was not any better than me. What strategies can we employ to help beat variance, or do we just accept it?

If you make that same play 1000 times how many times will you win? Dont focus on 1 result. If you make the correct plays over time you will be profitable. The opponent got lucky..just say shit happens and study for your next game and every other one in the future. Review that hand and all the others that got you to that point and look for plays that would have made you more money in pots you won or saved you money in pots you lost. Then youll have the next all in covered. If youre bankrolled properly you will never have empty pockets. Play within your bankroll so you never go broke.
