Anyone who truly knows anything about addiction will tell you that the 1st step is knowing, admitting and accepting that you do in fact have a problem. Then (after you've likely failed to overcome it alone a few times), admitting that you need help.

If you're at this stage I suggest you either seek out a family member or friend who you know has already dealt with or is dealing with their own problem. You may not think it, but any and all addictions are fundamentally related. Therefore don't be put off by the fact that they may be dealing with alcohol or other substance abuse issues. They will likely know how to set you on the path to recovery.

If you don't know anyone personally. Find your nearest GA, NA or AA meeting and go in, sit and listen. I assure you that it won't be long before you realize you're in the right place, with people who are both understanding and accepting.

And of course, professional help can never hurt. Though I would suggest a counsellor rather than a psychiatrist.

But for any of this to work, you have to be honest and truthful and forthcoming with yourself and those who are trying to help you.

It won't be easy, but it will be worth it.
