I think that Negreanu refers to a lesson in humility here, you can think of yourself as a better poker player than 99% of others, but in the end, you will always find better players than you so you should better concentrate on being a good and humble player in instead of wanting to become famous and make a fool of yourself at a certain moment.

In a certain way, yes, but you should not self-appreciate against anyone or in any situation, because when you put yourself at the table with the best 4 of the world and say you want the fool from there you start badly since you should appreciate yourself and say they are all equal to me

My opinion,there is no real difference between 5th or first in the world.They would all have the same chance at that table.Fully understand the meaning of the statement of course,i guess that little bit of extra pressure from the knowledge of it could make a difference so its hard to argue with all the same.

It's really a case of simple math. I'm not sure what else to say about it. If you are the 5th best player and the top 4 are seated with you then technically you're the sucker, but not really. Like many things in life there are multiple ways you can interpret scenarios like this.

I think there are two ways of looking at it.

You can look at it and base your skill against the other 4 people sitting at the table and deem yourself (at best) a small dog in that game and know a games variance could still make you a winner even though you are a likely target for the group.

The other way to look at the statement is. The only people better than me are all at this table! I can move to another table and avoid all the people likely to beat me!

Its ok to have another player make you look a sucker from time to time, but don't make a sucker out of yourself when you can easily make your own situation better.

Logic and good sense are in support of Daniel's statement no doubt. However, when it comes to poker, the most skilful player could lose to an amateur any time. Daniel said it himself after he lost to Rafael Nadal in Prague

I think the main idea is that YOU MUST BE FIRST player in the world!!! I think Daniel meant this - development.
Constantly evolve and then they will feel fifth. But you must think only about yourself and not of them. Then your brain will be calm and clean.
