Poker can mean different things to different players. Some people treat it purely as a way to make money, while others just enjoy the competition and the social side of the game.

For you, what matters more when you sit down to play, making a profit or simply enjoying the game? And do you think focusing too much on money takes away some of the fun from poker?

If I had to choose a purely ethical side, I'd say that enjoying the game matters more in the long run. Profit is a great byproduct (and a powerful motivator, I won't deny it), but when the focus becomes exclusively on making money, poker starts to feel more like a stressful job than a hobby or mental sport. Many pros and semi-pros end up reporting exactly that: the game becomes an obligation, variance hits hard, tilt becomes routine, and the initial passion dies.

Focusing too much on money can really take away some of the fun, yes.

What keeps people coming back to the tables for years is the balance between intrinsic passion (loving the process, the challenge, the learning) and extrinsic rewards (money, status, social interaction). When the balance tips only towards money or ego, burnout sets in quickly. Those who endure cultivate the deeper "why": the game as an infinite mental sport.

Honestly, I’m not even sure myself. Sometimes you play a lot and don’t get good results for a long time. But when you finally have a bit of luck and make a deep run in a tournament, those moments are what make you want to keep playing.

Of course money . What else . Maybe in the beginning it was 50-50 , fun and pursuit of profits . But later , month after month , it was the need for a win , a good win , a big win that made me keep on going ,trying to find a way to start having profits . Yeah . It's money .

For profit . For money . Fun is at the beginning . Later is only money . Now in live poker , in home games with friends , maybe it's also fun . But online it's more the| profits or only the| profits .the social aspect of poker is not so much in online poker . Money only . The big win .

I’d say it’s a mix, but I lean more toward profit when I play seriously. Poker is a game of skill, so it’s natural to want to measure your success and improve over time, and focusing on making profitable decisions is part of that.

That said, fun is still a big factor. If the game stops being enjoyable, it’s easy to make mistakes or lose motivation. I try to strike a balance—treating poker as a serious challenge while still enjoying the process, the competition, and the occasional bluff that just works perfectly.

For me, the best sessions are the ones where I learn, make good plays, and still have fun doing it.

For me, what keeps me playing poker long-term is a combination of challenge, improvement, and excitement. Poker is one of the few games where you can always get better—there’s always a new concept to study, a new strategy to try, or a new opponent style to figure out.

I also enjoy the mental aspect: reading opponents, managing risk, and making tough decisions under pressure. That constant mix of strategy and psychology keeps it engaging even after years of playing.

And of course, the potential for a big win or a well-executed bluff adds some adrenaline. Even if the money isn’t the main reason I play, winning consistently and seeing improvement over time is very satisfying.

In short, it’s the combination of learning, competition, and excitement that keeps me coming back session after session.

For me it’s the challenge.

Poker never really gets “solved” in practice. There’s always something new to learn and improve. Even after years, you still find new spots and better strategies.

Poker is one of the few things where you can put in time, study, review hands, adjust, and actually see yourself getting better over time. Like some people mentioned, there’s always a new leak to fix or a different type of opponent to figure out, and that keeps it interesting long term.

The money is nice, obviously, but I’ve noticed if I focus only on that, it starts to feel like a grind or even a job. The sessions I enjoy the most are when I feel like I played well, made good decisions, and learned something, regardless of the result.

I’m with you on that. I’ve been a professional poker player for years, and honestly, the most complicated part of the game has always been the mental side. I can play for hours and hours, I have my mindset routines, and I do everything I can to stay sharp, but even then, it’s still one of the toughest challenges.

That’s also why I’d highly recommend reading some of the articles I’ve found recently, because they really made me think. For example, this one on grinder burnout really hits the point:

Poker isn’t just about theory. There’s a huge mental component involved, and I think a lot of people underestimate how important that side of the game really is.
