What motivated you to start poker?

Hello everyone, I am new to the community and I would like to know what motivated them to start playing poker.
In my case, I became interested when I saw players in online tournaments go a long way making good decisions, even without having the best cards. I realized that poker isn't just luck, but strategy, patience and analysis.
And you? What inspired you to start?

Someone told me that big companies used to hire engineers with poker strategy knowledge to lead big companies. Which made sense in terms of risk and bankroll management.

I just always enjoyed watching professional poker players playing bit tournaments and cash games. Then online poker boom happened so I started playing online. At some point I went to a casino and started playing live. Now I play once in a while, when I have the time. Still just a recreational player. Never really thought to play for a living. I enjoy every moment I play poker or watch somebody else play poker. I feel I will always learn something new playing poker.

It's a cool game and you can make (lose) money playing it, also you can just watch smth or read while playing, it's just a cool time, if you are not grinding

The first tables were with a group of friends back then, there were a lot of people with personality, there were even internal rivalries and we played to guess the other's style, generally those who won kept the money from the pot and that made me very angry. In my case, we went to a party and I spent it on alcoholic drinks, I particularly hated it when they left with the pot and didn't share it, since there was so little money it was better to share it among friends. There were a few who kept the winnings and left, the rest we spent on the party, but what I liked the most were the anecdotes, we even managed to pay 4 or 5 re-entries, once we played 2 tables in a row we played almost 12 hours of poker, we even avoided going out, time was passed and that was lost, life (work, family, partners, etc.)

It was poker or crack. Crack quality was lacking by around the early 90's so I switched to poker and I've been a loser ever since.

I was a victim of PokerStars propaganda.
