One question I’ve been trying to ask myself more often: “What is my opponent actually representing here?”
Instead of just looking at my own hand, I try to build a story around theirs. Does their line make sense? Would they really play a strong hand this way? Or is something off?
Sometimes when you really think it through, the story doesn’t add up—and that opens the door for a call or even a bluff.
Other times, everything lines up perfectly… and it’s a clear fold.
It’s not always easy in real time, but it feels like a big step toward better decisions.
Do you actively think in terms of ranges and stories, or more about your own hand strength?

I always try to see things from the other player's perspective. What is my image at the table? Do they think I bluff a lot or that I always have it? What hands have I shown them? What do I represent and what do they think I have?
I try to adjust my play according to what they think they know about me. The cards I have are only part of the equation.

I think this is a very important part of improving in poker. Many players focus too much on their own cards and forget to think about what the opponent is representing. Trying to understand if their line actually makes sense can help avoid bad calls and also find good bluffing spots. I still pay attention to my own hand strength, but thinking in ranges and building a story usually leads to much better decisions overall.

It’s funny because sometimes you’ll see a weird play by your opponent that really doesn’t make any sense and if we can take our time and think about it and not act so fast we can start to put the puzzle pieces together and figure out what our opponent is up to. Like we raise preflop and get called by the big blind, the flop pairs like 882 rainbow and they check, we bet, they raise now. What are they really representing here, if they have an 8 wouldn’t they slow play it? I know 8s and 2s are more in big blinds range more than mine as a raiser, but still there’s no draws. I don’t know, it’s kinda funny sometimes what you see. Good luck have fun!
