I may start a poker society at the uni I am going and unsure what the best number of seats to have... I know that some people at uni will be interested in playing but at first I don't think too many people will attend.

I was thinking somthing like 8 seater tables.

Better in what respect? Are you thinking about space? Actually, I've wondered the same but was thinking about it after reading your post. I really don't know less people to beat with less at the table however, the pots would be smaller. I'll be watching to see other comments on your posts.

Space may not be a problem but don't know what people generally prefer... I normally prefer 6 seats.

Im also going to uni in a few weeks GL.

I think 6 would be best for this sort of setting, with more players you might need larger tables more seats etc that you dont have and it could be crampt or awkward or we.

I prefer 6 and think it would be best in a sort of home game environment.

Whatever it is never go more than 10. If you play at a bar or club they may have large enough tables for 10. but most normal tables and poker tables will work best with 6

My friday night tourney we play 15-25 depending on the turnout. Usually the tables will take care of themselves as far as knockouts. We buy in for $40 and that gives 3000 chips. Then there is a rebuy/add on for $40. It usually goes for 4-5 hours.

I would say 6 for a smaller group of people or 9 for anything big, then add tables as needed.

Nine or ten seats is standard for a full table.

A more relevant question is usually what shape are the tables, and are the games going to be self-dealt?

If they're going to be self-dealt then make sure you have a round table. Self-dealing on a racetrack table is a pain in the arse.

I am unsure what shape the tables will be but I guess it will be self-dealt

Thank you for the advice, it sounds like 6 would be the best from what a lot of people are saying.

Which Uni are you going to anyway.

I play in a monthly league (3 years now) and we pooled money from the buy ins and purchased 3 pro poker tables.
We started with one table the first year, expanded the players each year and got additional tables as needed.

We never seat more than 9 at a table, except for the final table, we start that with 10.
We have over 34 members but not everyone makes it each month so we try to limit it to 27 players although once or twice we have hit 30.

Put two decks of cards on each table (a red and a blue back set) and as the button goes around the player to the right shuffles the second deck and gets it ready to pass to the small blind when the button moves. This makes everything go faster and easier.

Enjoy the game and GL
