More importantly, why are they the best players? Your question is very broad. There are many different types of Poker, and each type has it's own best players. There are some abslolutely amazing tournament players who would get crushed in a ring game and vice versa. There are also players who would annhilate a no limit hold'em player in 7 card stud, draw lowball Omaha or draw Poker. Best thing to do is figure out which kind of Poker you like, go to that section of the forum and ask the same question

Except also asking "Why" and not "Who".

I do not know what about the prize money, but I'm more sympathetic to Daniel Negreanu. He plays well and can joke at the table.

Fedor Holz is a well-rounded poker player, heads-up, cash games and tournaments, he has it all at a young age. But he's retiring gradually from the poker scene.

Legends like Phil Ivey and Daniel Negreanu are great obviously. I have some doubts on Phil Helmuth lol, even with all the bracelets, I would say he's good not great.

Eric Seidel not only has he stood the test of time. He seems to be a purest learning poker w out tv and news articles breaking it all down or seeing hands on tv. You learned by losing your money. He seems to stay away from the media and NOT giving away his strategy for free like everyone. There is very minimum videos of his hands. Yet he is the most successful American tournament player and know and feared and respected in the poker community. Seems to be a nice guy who mastered poker and maybe sees the fame side of the game as illogical. reminds me that you have the freedom to make poker whatever you want. I'd want to be like that. And he was in rounders.

The word success comes to mind. If one is winning it can be determined as successful. Do you have to win the most money, win the most tournaments, place in the most tournaments, play a certain kind of poker or just win in general.
One can be respectable like Doyle Brunson and be considered the best.
If someone gets in the black after a year could also be considered the best.
Success comes in many shapes and sizes. One could be the best at their local/live tournament and cash games and be considered the best.
