They say it was in China, in the 10th century, while others point to its beginning with the game called "As Nas", from the 16th century. The first files that refer to the most current poker seem to locate the game around 1830, in the region of New Orleans, an american city with great french influence.

The first descriptions of poker practiced in New Orleans show us that the game was almost always played with half a deck, using about 20 cards only.

I never thought about it!! And it really can be very interesting. Still such questions: when was the first profigacy, the first tournament, the emergence of varieties and so on and so forth. I only know the history of Texas holdem

Poker was and still is used in Europe to mean 4 of a kind. So I am guessing it started in Europe as a precursor to poker. At some point 4 of a kind was best then evolved into what we have today. I am sure the internet can answer that question.

I read that texas hold em was invented in a bunkhouse. There were too many cowboys to play stud so they decided to deal less cards out. Logical.

There are only some theories of origin that are not fully proven. In the mid-16th century, the first mention of poker appeared in Europe. It is believed that poker was invented here. The game was more popular among Italians and Spaniards. Entertainment was called not poker, but "primero"Most historians are of the opinion that poker originated in China. There is a version that the French invented the game and the basic rules of poker and brought it to America. The first games began in Louisiana. It was here that poker arose, which in terms and rules is closest to the modern game.Something like this guys!A lot of versions, but I think we will never find out the truth)

European predecessor was Poque, which caught on in France in the 17th century. Poque and its German equivalent, pochen, were both based on the 16th-century Spanish game primero, which featured three cards dealt to each player and bluffing (or betting high on poor cards) as a key part of the game

Interesting!

Has anyone heard that the deck of cards originated as a taro deck and was later adjusted to be used to play games?
