I think alot of ppl on this forum have done something similar actually, or at least built a healthy roll from like $100. I've done a free $15 bankroll to over $25k in about a year w/ pretty low-moderate volume and that is nothing special at all. One guy on ipoker ran $2000 up to like 1.2M in a couple of weeks/months. Durrrr started w/ nl10, matt hawrilenko only deposited $100, etc. etc. A guy i know moved from nl50 HU to nl5k HU in under a year. I think that ferguson thing is probably the most overrated thing in poker, as it is pretty easy to make money once you move out of the micros.

I once made it up to 500 dollars from freerolls, but sadly I fell into tilt after a session of bad beats took me down to 300. I decided to walk away from my strongpoint, which is heads up razz, and went to play omaha in the biggest table I could find. Long story short, I lost everything within a few hands. Horrible feeling. I want to try it again though. Hope to see you guys in the cardschat tournaments.
