Q: Why is online poker harder than live poker?

A: Let's say that 20% of people who play poker are good, and 80% are bad. When you sit at a live poker table you are playing against one or two other good people.
Online the good players can play 20 tables at a time while the poorer players (who play on a whim or for fun) tend to play just one table. That greatly increases the percentage of good players at tables.

I think playing online poker is harder, since you play so many different games at the same time, also your buyin is so much less then in a live game for the same amount of reward. So many people do not care as much for the money if they know they can drop down a few levels and build their bankroll up again.

Like some stated before, playing online has a lot of distractions. Meanwhile if you're playing live, you're focus on the table, actually it all goes down whether you have more experience playing online or live.

Did you mean, is online harder to win than live games or just playing online itself harder than live games.

To me its easier to play online than at a live game. But to me its harder to win playing online than at a live game.

Why? I think theres alot of poker programs these guys use online, poker calculators they also use online. I can't realy put a good answer to this, but in my case. I gotta avoid bad beats to win online and play good to win in live games.

Thats just my opinion of playing both live and online for the last 8years.

I don't understand the comments about 'alot of distractions' while playing online. I mean you set up your own environment when playing online.... winning players won't be watching tv, surfing the net, answering emails, reading thru forums, answering the telephone, etc. while playing (not saying you can't do all this and more & still be a winning player.... just not the optimal conditions one would want while playing).
Personally I find it much more difficult to concentrate while playing live poker... more distractions & pace of the game is very slow.

don't get why there is any debate here whatsoever.

A winning online tournament player at avg buyin of $200 will absolutely destroy $200 buyin tournaments live - if they even bothered to play them with their horrid structures. TH reverse is likely true as well. smoone with a slight win rate in $200 live tournies is probably going to get lit on fire trying to play $200 freezouts on the net.

Same with cash. A winning live 5/10 player will lose the house car and dog at 5/10 online. Good luck to them even beating .50/$1 online over time.

Internet play is just that much better at the lower buyin levels for all the many reasons stated in this thread.
-Multitabling regulars
-Huds leveling the playing field
-online players generally seeing 10-1000x the number of hands that people who only play live have seen
-online schooled players are so much better quantitalvely and fundamentally so much more sound it's not even close. Hand volume, training sites, 2+2 etc... not to mention such a high % of young people with nothing but time to dedicate to this and soak it up.
-and lastly, the online players are making very quick transitions to the live tables these days... and its much easier then the other way round. Just look how many of the wsop and WPT Final tables are full of kids 21-25. It's because they are that much better players from he online training. And it's only going to increase as a trend.

I just came back from Niagara playing live 1-2. It's a bit of a trek for me to get to a casino so I play online way more than live but I enjoy live a lot more because it is easier quite frankly.

However too much is made I think about tells. I made most of my money that night on someone I watched who made a river bluff several times shoving after missing their flush. She tried it with me and I called with pocket 8's for a nice pick up. Now if you watched this person you might not get any sort of read for a bluff but if you were paying attention to their tendencies you'd figure it out.

I really feel the online experience, having witnessed many thousands of hands where my only knowledge is people's betting patterns and tendencies helps me play live a great deal.

The only disadvantage I can see is that being unaccustomed to live a person can fall into some bad tell habits that give away easy info to experienced live players. Nothing that can't be learned and overcome quickly. I have very little live experience and was able to bluff post flop on a couple of occasions and take down the pot with position.

Because it's impossible to read players playing online vs live where you can spot a liar a mile away.

I play at the Casino once a week and make roughly 2-800 dollars a week.
Online i spend 40 and i usually have to refill every now and again... the most i got my bankroll online is 150... i'm playing too high a stakes but i need to practice with the better players so i win live :).. *practice* but i'm just waiting for that dream run online so i can make 100 a week on avg and money on the weekend and slowly merge into full time poker... But my online is letting me down atm

Plus i'm extremely good at picking up vibes off players and gathering reads... My online helps me put the cards together which sometimes live it won't matter what i have :)

My worst enemy Online is my tilt... i seem to walk out of the casino if i'm down 200 and thats it... but i'll lose a whole bankroll in 2 days due to bad beats and just bad luck... It's not all bad luck its poor decision making, but often it's great decisions just not paying off..

My answer to online though being harder, i believe i just need to find the right stakes to play at :) ... 1/3 live is where i own.. and 1c 2c is where i don't online :)... hot and cold with 10nl ... trying 6nl lately might need to put a few hundred online and just go higher

Those who play live poker are recreational players, they play just for gathering for social reasons. Those that actually take effort to put their money on the internet are serious players (Definitely not for social reason as you are just facing a computer screen). Serious players study the game and play better.

In my opinion online is a lot easier rather than live, I'm mainly a tournament player and I love the faster pace and watching the donks drop like flys. But that's just me.
