Why is the tournament structure so important?

I have heard numerous times other players criticising the tournaments structure, especially when it comes to live games.
If the structure affects every player involved in a particular tournament in the same way then is it really so important?
Or maybe complaining about the structure is one of the preferred excuses that some often use to justify disappointing results?

The larger the ratio between stack and blinds plus the longer blind levels plus smaller increases in the blinds at each level allows more 'play' at each level. The increased amount of 'play' reduces variance for the more skilled players.

Saying that everyone plays the same structure is kinda mute. How would you feel if you entered a tournament where they ante'd your full stack on the first hand ??

Basically the shorter the stacks the more luck will come into play. Better players want deeper stacks and longer levels, so they can play more hands against weaker players. The shorter the stacks the less hands they get to play, hence luck plays a much bigger roll.

Buy-in late to some of the turbos on FT(I think it was Tilt) and you basically get that tenbob. I wasn't paying attention a couple weeks ago when I bought into some tourney and blinds were 600/1200 and I was put in the BB my first hand... needless to say I was out of it after that because my hand didn't hold up whatever it was.

There is a tournament on microgaming I think, where for a euro entry, everyone is all in every hand. It regularly gets 1500+ runners lol.

There is some info on MTT structures in this thread, which you might find useful.
