Poker Is A Numbers Game
$75,000,000.00 – The total prize money at this years World Series
4000 – the number of players expected to register for the Main Event
60,000 – the area in square feet that the Rio has set aside for poker tables
200 – the number of tables in the Poker Room at the Rio
2200 – the number of players that can play at any one time
4 – the number of hours it took to register for Event #2 at the World Series
3.5 – the number of US Dollars it will cost you for bottled fruit juice at the Rio’s gift shop
1 –the number of Phil Helmuths that were NOT HAPPY at having to wait the 4 hours it took to register for event #2!
0- the score that a big man desperately running to take a leak and get back to his table between hands made against the Rio’s carpet after tripping along the way. That is, big man running – 0, Carpet 1.
Well, they finally made the move from Binions to the Rio and by all accounts, people seemed happy. "It wasn't as nice as the Rio, but it was old school. You felt like you were a gambler from the 50's like in the movies." – Antonio Esfandiari, sporting a 3 day growth, sunglasses and looking like an old school gangster.
But the move was not without it’s teething problems. Take the wait for example – 4 hours of standing in line to register for an event. The old school that Antonio mentioned meant waiting for 45 minutes tops.
This is probably not what most of us dream of when we imagine what it would be like to go and play at the World Series of Poker. It sure wasn’t what Phil Helmuth was thinking he’d be doing for four hours and he let everybody know about it. Chris Ferguson might be Jesus but how dare they treat God like that!
The wait didn’t seem to bother some players as much as it did others though. Take David Williams who appeared positively serene. Might have something to do with being able to spend even more time thinking about his beloved brand new Mercedes.
And Dan Harrington routinely spends more time waiting for the perfect timing to bring out one of his rare stone cold bluffs.
And if all that waiting makes you a little hungry? At least you know that the Rio has comped you the grand sum of $10.50 off the price of your first meal.
But there is at least one player who thought the wait was more than worthwhile, didn’t eat the carpet and has probably never tasted a better meal at the Rio.
That is Andy Nguyen, winner of Event # 1 for Casino employees. Ironically, Andy is a dealer at Binions, the cradle of the World Series. His lucky number? 83,390 – the number of Us Dollars Andy won for taking out 1st place.
