Can you be the best poker player in the world?

I am not quite sure what you mean - but the obvious answer was he died. If you are asking why he is not discussed more these days I think there are several reasons.

First, he played in a time before poker was as popular as it got (following Chris Moneymaker winning the wsop) at a time when media did not have much of a focus on the game.

Secondly, he was a controversial figure who could be very abrasive and someone who abused drugs heavily. So it was hard to cast him as the poster boy for poker in his heyday.

However, several older players knew him in the day, and they have seen the greats come and go, yet he is still regarded as the best card/poker player who ever lived.

To set an unrealistic goal is a fantasy. Been nice to offer a time frame with a course of action. Then with that, the mention of reporting back with the progress with those time frame and goals.

But just to clear up your last doubt, no, I don't think it's enough to be a professional to be the best in the world.

If you search on Google for the word professional, you will see that a Poker professional is one who makes money from Poker, so just being a professional is not enough to achieve the topic's goal.

Just trying to show you understanding, I believe in the evolution and dissemination of knowledge, whatever it may be, then, if you are the best or just good at anything, you need to find time and a way to transmit your knowledge, doing good to yours. next.

So with that answer, I hope I have dismembered and explained it in a more didactic way for your understanding.

No, my question is, why didn't he win everything he played?

First, as you said yourself, Poker was not popular, meaning there were far fewer players, resulting in less competition.

Even so, his victories have a great gap, so there was a great occlusion, perhaps, his addiction and family shakes would have directly impacted his results and maybe he would have been the best in the world, but it was not, in my view.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not belittling all of his genius and his progress that little has come and few have come.

But someone I think is above him in terms of game consistency is Fedor Holz, what do you think?

errrrrr...no

the aim is to become as good as i can...to fulfil my potential...to learn from study and from my mistakes.

chip reese imo was probably the best ever ...consistancy wise...over all disciplines.

players have hot streaks...when they are in the A+zone over a year...maybe 2 years...recently Holz and Bonomo have enjoyed this mixture of skill and run good...and white magic as Hellmuth would say. This white magic is jedi-like ...but it is real.

Hellmuth is still way above everyone else historically as a holdem tourney player....mainly by knowing when to fold. Cash games, he is a fish. Interesting, that.

Have you read his Wikipedia page? You said he did not win everything - name one player who has won everything - yet he was so good at gin rummy no one would play him anymore so he switched to poker. The likes of Doyle Brunson and Mike Sexton thought him the greatest player.

Yes, Fedor Holz is a great player (but, Holz does not win everything either), but many believe Ungar was such a genius that if alive today he would still dominate the game.

Personally, I am convinced that I can become a professional player. But for this I have to work hard for many years. And obviously, if I go step by step to my goal, one day my dream will come true.

I didn’t say he wasn’t good, only he didn’t have a continuity.
And an undeniable fact, at his time Poker was more "easy" to play.

Poker is a very dynamic game, the game has changed a lot from 2005 to the present day, so imagine the technical chasm that exists in that period.

Again, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that he was a player ahead of his time, but maybe if there weren't his problems, he could have achieved the best position.

Now Holz doesn't get any more because he retired at 22, don't you think?
