I usually prefer playing against recreational players because the games tend to be more unpredictable and there are more opportunities to win bigger pots.

At the same time, playing against regulars can be useful for improving your game and testing your strategy against stronger opponents.

What do you prefer? Do you actively look for tables with more recreational players, or do you not really care who you're playing against?

On the one hand, it's easier to play against an amateur because they make more mistakes than a regular player. On the other hand, when you play against a regular, you understand how to play against them and what they can do. Amateurs can be unpredictable, but it's still easier to play against them, I think.

There are good regulars and bad regulars, same with recreationals, good and bad. So we need to further profile each player down to what mistakes they are making and how to exploit each one. Just because they are a regular doesn’t mean they are good. Lots of regulars make mistakes regularly.
I would rather be the player who can pressure my opponent and not the other way around. If I have a table full of sharks that know how to pressure then it’s going to be a long day lol

For sure I like to meet recreational players only but unfortunately there are some regs too anytime

I like the ones who are bad and prefer to play huge pots. Yesterday I had a couple of players who I hadn't seen before and because it is 'fast fold' style poker, I believe they think they go unnoticed. What they don't understand is that they still stick out from the rest of the player pool and when they repeatedly attempt things like > HUGE overpot river shoves (mostly 'all-in') from OOP in the blinds with air it gets taken advantage of. I won ~$150 in 20mins. yesterday playing 25nl.
I like playing against the type of player who usually only plays on Friday & Saturday (and Sunday)

I prefer regular players; I already know them and I know how they play.

I don't have any preferences, I think each player is unique, I prefer to do individual analyses.

Play with both
Maximise the thinking level
That will help win big MTTs

I want to play a variety of games.

I think player type matters less than the mistakes they actually make. A regular who repeats the same leak can be much easier to play against than an unpredictable recreational player.

I don't have any preferences when facing specific players; I try to adapt to the table by observing how each of them plays.

Personally, I actually prefer playing against regular poker players rather than recreational players. With regulars, you usually get a better idea of what to expect from them. After you have played a few hands together, you can start picking up on their tendencies, betting patterns and the way they react in different situations. That makes it easier to adjust your own game accordingly.

Recreational players can be a completely different story. Sometimes they make plays that seem to have absolutely no logic behind them, which can make them really difficult to read. They might call with almost anything, suddenly make a huge bet or chase a hand that most regular players would have folded ages ago. It can feel like they are playing poker more like a slot machine than a strategy game. I know they can be profitable to play against, but personally, I find regulars much easier to deal with. 😏

Naturally, I prefer playing against recreational players, since that’s where the money comes from.

I definitely prefer tables with more recreational players. The games are usually more profitable, and there are more opportunities to get value from mistakes. Against several regulars, every decision tends to be more difficult and the edges are smaller.
For learning, I don’t mind facing stronger players, but if I’m choosing a table to make money, I’ll take the recreational table every time.

prefer either, however if I've flagged that a certain player is super good or ageressive then likely don't want to go up against them

Doesn't matter me as I like and play more for a bit of a challenge so I don't really game select, player select or bum-hunt. I do table select thou and I like a table with a high VPIP and bigger pots. As I'm don't grind away daily for leaderboards or rewards I need tables that offer good sized pots for the stakes. Gotta win enough to beat the rake.

Cheers!!!

playing with recreational players, it's easier to understand what they can have, they pay more, they bluff less, so it's a relatively simpler game, I don't think that playing with more skilled players will make me better, it's better to study poker than to play against them and lose
