I’ve noticed that after playing for a long time, I start making more mistakes. Taking a short break seems to help me stay focused. Do you take breaks during long sessions, or do you prefer to keep playing until the end? What works best for you?

Yes of course. With MTTs it kind of gives itself, because there is a scheduled hourly break of 5-6 minutes on all sites. In some cases SnGs also take part in this hourly break. But if you play cash games or SnGs, that dont take part in the hourly break, you should definitely arrange regularly breaks for yourself during a long session. Nobody can maintain full concentration for hours on end, and a break also gives you time to visit the toilet, make a cup of coffee etc.

As likely one of the few who play both cash(during the week) and MTT's(weekends) regularly when I do play yes. But I keep my breaks when playing cash the same as the breaks every 55 mins in MTT's and I only take the same 5 min long break that MTT's give you. Fwiw I'm also likely a bit more conditioned the most when it comes to playing longer sessions as that's what I enjoy. In fact the longer the better for me. I would consider a cash session short if it's not 4-5 hours at least.

Again thou I'm a bit different then the avg bear in my opinion. I'm use to working 8-12 days and being on call 24/7. When you own and run your own business that's just the it is.

Cheers!!!

I'm definitely in the "take breaks" camp. Even a 5-10 minute break to stretch, grab some water, or clear my head makes a noticeable difference. I've found that once I start making small mistakes or playing on autopilot, my edge drops quickly.

I'd rather play a few shorter, focused sessions than one long session where fatigue starts affecting my decisions. Staying mentally fresh is just as important as knowing the right strategy.

I will take a break during the timed breaks that the sites give, but overall, I really don't take breaks between games or things like that. I mean, I can't say I don't. It depends on the schedule. You know, say there's a series going on and there's five events that day. I may have overlap between starting one and the next one, so I don't stop except for the breaks. But if I get knocked out, I'm not necessarily looking for a new tournament right away since I know I'm going to play a new one, and I'll take a break. If there is a gap between the events, I definitely take a break. I'll watch a little TV, relax, read, meditate.

In my opinion, having a plan and a schedule for a long session is crucial for achieving better results at the table. During sessions lasting over five hours, I sometimes lose focus while taking breaks to prepare a snack or lunch.. having things planned out, including breaks to refresh your mind, definitely helps when there isn't anyone else at home to handle the basics while you're playing daily.
And I believe that not playing for a day or two during the week is good for the mind, it really boosts self-esteem when the previous sessions didn't go so well..

Taking breaks is not just a preference; it is a physiological necessity for maintaining peak decision-making ability. Even top-tier professionals experience "decision fatigue"—the degradation of quality in choices made after a long period of intense mental processing.

Don't play automatically. After a decent number of hands, you often don't fully understand what you're doing. As soon as you realize you're not in control, quit.

You can take a break even during the games, you don't have to sit still, you just stop playing any speculative hands, you pay very few hands and you admire your opponents trying to understand them, it would be a break that gives you time for a glass of "water" or for a breath of fresh air after which you play much more realistically and more adapted to what is happening at the table

I use the hourly breaks in tournaments for bathroom breaks. There are times when I have dozed off between hands, usually while playing cash games late at night...when that happens, it is time for bed.

That's right; during long gaming sessions, I always take 15-minute breaks to relax. Then I start my second session—taking a break is crucial for regaining your focus.

I'm grinding mostly MTTs nowadays, so I'm taking the 5-6 mins per hour breaks and go for a short walk, make a coffey, short bathroom break... but even when I've grinded Cash Games - I would also love my short breaks to do similar things as I've noticed that this also helps me stay focused and I could play close to my A game for longer period of time... so IMO it's very important to take short breaks during a (long) poker session!

If I have specific tournaments I play during the day, and I get eliminated, I start doing other things around the house—like having a bite to eat, running errands, taking a shower, or just getting some fresh air.

People who run stables online do data break downs on their players and the vast majority of cash game players have a significant fall off of ROI at the 90min mark while playing 4 tables at a time.

There have been many psychology studies regarding decision fatigue, and our brains have a limit to how many decisions we make before our failure rate skyrockets.

Rest is essential.

I would never be absent during a tournament, but I do take the necessary breaks when it ends or stop playing real money games if necessary.

These days I mostly play for fun, so I don't really have a strict break routine. If I'm enjoying the session I'll keep going, and if I start feeling tired or annoyed I'll just quit instead of forcing it. I think knowing when to stop completely is just as important as knowing when to take a short break.

But, of course, if you are playing tournaments, you already have 5 min in the end of each hour, so you should take these periods.

I need to stretch a bit once in a while, otherwise I will end up in back pain. I home it is not that bad with a good chair, but at casino seating is not that comfortable and I hate sitting for hours in those chairs so I really wait for the breaks there.
