Is it essential to have a coach to be a consistent winner in poker?

Hi everyone.

Assuming that we already understand ABC poker well, from what moment does it become essential to hire a coach?
Obviously I'm not in that instance yet, but I want to think about the future (a year or so, or more) to start generating an extra income with poker, and maybe two years or more to live on it.
I have not yet decided my specialty (I am between the sits and the mtt, but I think that the first ones have less and less traffic and maybe I should investigate the spins).
Excuse me that my questions remain those of a novice, but that is what I am, but with the firm decision to stop being so.

Returning to the question from the beginning, is a coach essential to be a winner in poker?

I have used several different coaches and personally, I think they are somewhat helpful. My favorite is Jonathan Little. He does offer a free opportunity to test out his things. You can try it.

Because of how efficient and unforgiving rake is in removing money from the tables, only elite players can be profitable online.

The vast majority if not all poker coaches are not profitable themselves, don't pay attention to the success stories they parade in front of you, that's advertising.

The truth is successful and profitable poker players don't coach others, they make money doing what they like, playing poker. Think logically, why would a profitable poker player spend his time recruiting students and teaching others how to play instead of playing poker himself?

In poker, nothing is more helpful than experience. Here is some advice from me to you, you can keep it or throw it away, your choice:

Keep playing, pay attention, study.
Don't waste your money on coaches, and don't set goals of living off poker. If it happens, great, but it should come naturally when the money you make in an hour of playing poker exceed the money you make in an hour of working at your current job.

not essential, but everyone has a way to evolve in poker or in any sport or profession, you can read good books and then look for professional people on the subject and add knowledge and ideas and build your own vision of the game!

Hi everyone!! I believe that a coach can help you improve your game a lot if you decide to hire one who focuses on what you do. But they have many sites that offer free live training and you can answer your questions by consulting those coaches, there are also many videos on youtube and other platforms with free trainings. In other words, you have many options before reaching those instants where you must pay for knowledge. My advice would be that you start watching these free videos and trainings to improve your game, surely in a while you will find a place where you feel comfortable participating in free trainings. It is not essecial but with it you will save time and money.

Coaches have their place, but I think you can get to the same place with hard work. Once you pay coaches, you now have to have that much more ROI to break even. Also, not all coaches teach the same thing. Which one is correct? One may be a cash game specialist and one may be very adept at tournaments. You would not want to apply cash game specific advice to a tournament setting. I have see some serious flaws in some of the coaches ideas. On the surface they can all defend what they are teaching, sometimes with shear passion. You are you and you know what you need.

Is a coach necessary? No. Is a coach beneficial? Almost certainly.

My advice is take your game as far as you reasonably can without a coach. Study hard, and objectively. Post hands that have you confused on here and mull it over with various people, bearing in mind that different people will have different outlooks and goals to you when it comes to poker.

Once you're at a point (and that could easily be years down the line, or maybe even never) where you are struggling to find leaks in your own game, and you're not making the sort of money to want to, or feel you could if you improved further, you should approach a coach.

I really think this is a waste of money. But anyone with his style of seeing things. Personally I think if you know how to use google and play constantly poker this coach thingy is useless but as I said its just an opinion and it should be treated as one. Thanks.

hi. today I see so many possibilities to learn online, reading good strategy books and practicing on online tables and in various live venues and tournaments. I think that to become a poker professional and live off an extra income or just from poker, you should dedicate yourself to follow the news, reading, and everything that involves poker. Surely if you dedicate yourself as in any other profession / sport, you will achieve your goals.

I think there are a few ways to look at coaching.

It can, of course, be of benefit as a great coaching tip could shorten the time it would take you to learn a concept yourself. Additionally you will hopefully be presented with ideas you had never even conceptualized. So in theory great.

However, I agree with one of zinzir's points - nothing beats experience.

And for me this is where coaching is often one dimensional as few coaches seem to take a nuanced approach. By this I mean each player has his or her own style. So it's fine to say for example, play more aggressively, re-steal pots or whatever. But in practice every player develops at their own speed...and the way to develop those skills is via deep, prolonged experience.

I would seriously consider coaching if I believed they could make over your 'poker character' but I think that a tall ask.

People learn differently. You may need a Coach to encourage you to study as many people learn faster with someone's help than reading or watching videos alone. Honestly, experiment and see what works for you.
