Patience: The Most Underrated Skill in Poker

Many players spend countless hours studying hand ranges, pot odds, and advanced strategies. While these are essential, one skill often separates long-term winners from everyone else: patience.

Not every hand is worth playing, and not every spot is worth fighting for. Great poker isn't about playing more hands—it's about making better decisions. Folding weak hands, waiting for profitable opportunities, and staying emotionally disciplined are all part of a winning strategy.

In the long run, disciplined players tend to outperform those who let boredom or frustration dictate their actions.

What's your opinion? Do you think patience is the most valuable skill in poker, or would you choose something else?

Patience is super important but it's not really a skill. It's just a choice.

If you get bored folding too much, open 2 or 3 tables. I'm dead serious. If I'm in an MTT I will usually open up a small SnG just to have 2 tables running. It's the best way to maintain range discipline. I highly recommend this.

I agree what patience one importance player skill

I definitely think patience is one of the most underrated skills in poker. A lot of beginners understand the technical side of the game but struggle with the mental side. They know they should fold, but boredom, ego, or the feeling that they need to “do something” takes over.

That being said, I wouldn’t say patience alone makes a great player. I think the best players combine patience with discipline, emotional control, and the ability to adapt. You can wait for good spots all day, but if you don’t know how to take advantage of them when they come, it doesn’t matter. The hardest part of poker is often doing nothing for hours and then making the right decision when the important moment finally arrives. Long-term winners are usually the players who can stay calm, avoid unnecessary battles, and trust the process.

I disagree. Most beginners don't. For the most part they're completely inelastic, especially pre-flop, and they have no idea what profitability odds are. They'll call down half-pot barrels or more with gut draws.

In my opinion, patience and knowledge are indispensable skills to be a poker player. I don't think having patience alone is the best approach, it goes hand in hand with being a good player who knows exactly what they are waiting for! Not only good cards, but also a good attacking position, favorable scenarios,..

Absolutely agree. Patience is what prevents you from burning money out of pure boredom. You can have perfect technical knowledge on paper, but if you lose patience and start playing marginal hands just to see a flop, all that study goes out the window. Discipline is the real foundation.
