Do you tend to read more players' patterns or focus more on the game itself? What worked best for you?

I try to focus on both, but player patterns are very important to me. Understanding how opponents play can make decisions much easier, especially against regular players. At the same time, I still pay attention to fundamentals and overall game flow, because relying only on reads can sometimes be dangerous.

I try to take good notes, color code players, and use a hud.

It makes game selection a lot easier.

To me the game itself is what the other players are up to. Once you figure that out, adjust and exploit their mistakes.

We must do both that is why poker can be very difficult. If we do not have strong fundamentals of poker we do not have the ability to use player data to max our ROI.
I once gave advice to a player based on solver data--I just gave them the conclusion not all the data they stated it would be of no value because the exploit they had for the player was the Villain was extra tight in that spot.
So I asked what extra tight range they gave the Villain that they were exploiting from. The range they described was wider than the solver range. So they thought they were exploiting a nit but the nit was in their minds playing far too many weak Ax hands for the spot.

That is why we need the base from which we can then deviate to make our exploits correctly

It's half the game in my opinion.

Player notes are important; it's rare for a player to change their playstyle in the short term. Keep notes on them with the date.

In poker, reading your opponents is just as important as the cards you hold. Every bet size, timing, and reaction can reveal valuable information. The players who pay close attention often make the best decisions and gain the biggest edge.

Your cards tell only part of the story. The rest comes from understanding your opponents’ patterns, habits, and emotions. In poker, the ability to read people can turn ordinary hands into winning opportunities.

I agree. Recognizing when a player is slow playing or bluffing with zip is important, but you still have to play good fundamental poker.

It is also through reading players that you learn how to manipulate opponents.
Learn how to feign weakness properly and reap the pots.

For me, solid fundamentals come first — position, stack sizes, ranges, ICM, all that. But once those become automatic, player tendencies start making the biggest difference.
A lot of low/mid stakes players are actually pretty predictable over time. Some always overbluff rivers, some never defend enough, others only raise big hands. Picking up those patterns and adjusting exploitatively has probably helped me more than trying to play perfectly balanced poker all the time.
