Starting a poker career requires learning the basics, discipline, and bankroll management.Even though people know for sure that they always lose at casinos, they still go there because it's not a certainty, and their brain clings to the possibility that things will go wrong. There are many other nuances that come into play, but that's another story. The poker world is a little different. Unlike the casino world, the main income source here—the game organizer—doesn't directly win money from players, but simply collects rake. The operating principle, however, doesn't change much—players still need to be lured in; they still need to be misled about their ability to win. And while live poker is relatively serene in this regard—it's often just a sidecar for the casino, and doesn't generate significant revenue compared to regular tables and slot machines, so no one really cares what goes on there—online poker is quite bloodthirsty and ferocious.

Get the free version of GTO Wizard and study preflop charts---you do not have to play GTO just know preflop ranges really well. Take the 30 day course here and then go to Octopi solvers youtube page to study more. Unless you have study money then join a paid study plan--there are many to research online.

If you’re just starting poker, here’s the simplest way to improve fast (without getting overwhelmed):

Most beginners try to learn everything at once — ranges, GTO, bluffing, etc.

That’s actually what keeps people stuck.

Honestly, If I could go back to when I started, I’d focus on just 4 things:

1. Play fewer hands
→ Fold more than you think. Most money lost at low stakes comes from playing too many hands. Folding at the right time saves you a lot of money.

2. Position matters more than your cards
→ Play more hands late position, way tighter early. Positional advantage is key to outplaying your opponent.

3. Stop bluffing (for now)
→ At beginner stakes, people call too much. Just value bet your good hands.

4. Think about stack size
→ A hand that’s good at 50bb is very different at 10–15bb.

If you just do these 4 things, you’ll already be ahead of most players at micro stakes.
I truly wish I learned all this sooner because it would have saved me a lot of money.

One thing I see a lot from newer players:
They’re unsure if they made a mistake in a hand or just got unlucky.

If you want, post a hand you’re unsure about and I’ll break it down — that is usually the fastest way to improve.

Hey, welcome! 👋 Poker can feel overwhelming at first, but you’re already doing the right thing by asking.

A few tips to get started:

  • Learn the basics (hand rankings, positions, betting)
  • Try not to start playing with money but if you do... start with play money or very small stakes
  • Be patient and don’t play too many hands, control emotions
  • Watch videos or beginner guides to speed things up
  • Try using free tools to study — stuff like equity calculators, quizzes, or trainers (for example LibreGTO, PokerGreed tools, or platforms like OptimusPoker) can help you improve way faster
  • Manage your bankroll properly
Focus on learning first, not winning — results come later.

Good luck! ♠️

If you're a beginner, don't overcomplicate the game.
Play carefully! Focus on good positions and strong starting hands. You should also understand that this is a game, and losing is part of the game. Good luck at the tables.
